Noticing Newbies NL

F

irst of all, happy Valentine's Day. *Heart* I am here today to talk about your true love. The one you might hide from others. That secret love that many might not agree with or understand. The love for the written word.

Don't you just love the way your fingers caress the keyboard with each letter, word, sentence? The feeling of accomplishment when you complete a written piece? There are so many people who simply cannot understand that kind of love, or the need to put word to paper/screen.

"It's just a book," or "what's so special about that?" It makes my heart break a little every time someone speaks those words. Blasphemy, I tell you! Not only do I live and breathe books, as many of you do as well I'm sure, I also collect them, because I cannot part with the characters.

But what about your own love affair with words? When did you first realize that writing is something you enjoy and wanted to make it a permanent thing? Is that why you joined the site? If you're a new member, what are you hoping to accomplish? What is your goal? If you're an oldie like myself, have your reached your goal yet?

I joined the site when I was in my twenties. A couple of poems and I realized that no one around me cared about! "Cute." - "It doesn't pay." - "It won't last."

I'm sure that only a small number who joined the site had a goal of publishing, but rather looked for a place to be accepted. Somewhere where the written word would be appreciated. Many years later, plenty wrote books and published them. Others decided that it's not something they want but enjoyed the community itself, the camaraderie, being accepted, and felt at home. Let's face it, this is a getaway from reality.

I've been asked many times why I'm still here after all these years if I don't bother publishing anything. It was never my goal. The site wasn't a stepping stone, it was a place of opportunities I wanted to explore. It became a second home within the first six months and this is family. It's never about the destination but the journey itself and I'm not done traveling.

If your goal is to get published, then you'll have to put in the work. A lot of editing along the way as well. Accept criticism with grace and finesse and keep going forward. Don't get frustrated when the going gets tough or you don't get the results you hoped for. Keep on trucking. Failure is acceptable, quitting isn't. One day when you publish that masterpiece, remember your roots, remember how you got there and return the favor if you can. I wish you all the best with your writing adventures!

'til next time!
