Item Lengths

What makes a short story? A novella? Flash or micro fiction? Generally, word counts decide.

Micro-story/Flash Fiction: typically less than 2,500 words but often far less than that.

Short story: generally 7,500 words or less

Novella: between 17,500 and 40,000 words (at about 250 words per page, this would mean 70 - 160 pages)

Novel: between 50,000 and 110,000+ words (200 to 440+ pages)

These are just general guidelines according to various sources on the internet. But how do you decide how long your work should be? It can depend on many factors, including how much time you have, how big the story is that you want to tell, who your target audience is, etc.

The great thing about entering contests & activities on WDC is that the contest itself typically asks for a specific length, or at least it should have a word count limit. (Note to contest hosts: Word limits are a great idea! Don't forget to add them to your contest rules!)

On a related note, to find your item's word count, click on the gear at the top right of the page when you're looking at your item and click on Word Count.

You might think that writing flash fiction is easier because it's less words (I'm sure I thought that at some point), but that's definitely not a given! I've seen some very creative flash fiction challenges during my time on this site!

I feel like a lot of writers start out writing short stories. Maybe they're less daunting than writing a novel? I've also heard, though, that they're harder to publish. I'm a firm believer in any writing being good practice.

Find a contest in my picks below and enter!

Take care, and as always, keep on writing! *Quill*
