Writing is a form of therapy; sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose or paint can manage to escape the madness, melancholia, the panic and fear which is inherent in a human situation.

Before you answer my question, "Do Contests and Activities sidetrack you from actual writing?", let me tell you that in all my years on Writing.com I've never written so much compared to this past year. That's thanks to an activity. I wasn't a fan of contests/activities. Not because they'd sidetrack me. I just thought my writing wasn't any good. No, I didn't care what others thought, I just didn't want to waste anyone's time reading my nonsense. But without a deadline my writing dwindled to nothing. I was the one who ran contests and random activities and I didn't write much. I still run contests and activities but I finally found time to write.
Granted, I always had plenty of time. I lacked the inspiration. Something that would make me write even if I didn't want to. With the activities I'm participating in right now, they make me accountable for my daily routine as well as enter random contests to keep up with my writing. However, none of my stories flow into each other. They are random thoughts, jumping from one side to the other without a way to connect them.
At times, I feel disconnected from said writing and the characters I create. Do you ever feel that way? While I truly enjoy the fact that I can sit down and write a story out of thin air, I'd also like to make more sense of them. To understand them better, to give more than a glimpse into what could be a good world to the reader.
On the other hand I'm not quite ready for the creation of the big bad writing world. I lack the energy to stick with it. So, I stick with the snippets of stories that are somewhat to my satisfaction. Some create that spark where I feel I should work on it some more, but then again, I'm not ready.
I'm here to tell you that it's okay. Many of us hit writer's block and if you truly want to snap out of it and get your muse to jump into writing, participate in contests and activities. You're a writer! You have imagination. The real world tends to drain our energy but if you glance around this site you'll be surprised where you might find your muse hiding. Our muse doesn't desert us. We desert them by focusing too much on other things.
I truly believe that this is the best writing site you'll ever come across. It offers so many possibilities! If you're looking for something specific that you alone can't find, then you have to ask. No one can answer a question that's not asked. It's up to you to do so.
Which brings me to my question. While at times we might get distracted by shiny GPs, cute images, and whatnot, it's up to you to find the balance which works for you.
Thank you for reading.
'til next time!
