Letter from the editor

This coming October, I will celebrate my 7th year with Writing.com. During my time here, I’ve seen many people come and go; but I’ve also made a lot of great friends too. When I opened my account, I didn’t know a soul here. As a matter of fact, I found WdC quite by accident. I was reading through an old writing magazine online and found listings for online writing groups. There were quite a few listed but, for some reason, Writing.com looked interesting and here we are!

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of praise regarding the community here and I couldn’t agree more. Considering this is an online community and the ability to remain completely anonymous is well with each person’s prerogative; I see people reach out with compassion, concern, and friendship to others every single day. At the same time, I hear from people who complain that no one talks to them, reads their work, or reviews anything in their port. Well, when I hear things like this, it makes me sad, but we all need to remember that WdC is a sizeable community with thousands of members.

It reminds me of a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “If you want a friend, you need to be a friend.”

What does that mean? It means that if we don’t get out there and take part in conversations, join activities, or post in forums, we remain pretty much invisible. The more active and plugged in we are, the more people we will run into. Engage in conversations, review each other's work, etc. We may not ‘hit it off’ with every person we chat with, but if we keep at it, we will find members who share similar interests; whether it be animals, plants, cooking, or preferred genres.

An online group differs greatly from walking into a party at someone’s house. In someone’s home, another guest may spot you off by yourself and come strike up a conversation and maybe introduce you to a couple of other people. In an online community, we don’t have that luxury - we can see you by yourself, so you need to reach out - again and again. Ask questions, say hello, start a thread about a project you are working on, and ask for feedback or insight. Interject yourself in the Newsfeed and forum posts. There are so many wonderful people here and I hate to see you missing out!
