Letter from the editor

*EyesRight* Hey Look! Look At MEEEEE! *EyesLeft*

As children, we are taught not to brag. Nobody likes a braggart! As authors, we have to get over that. We need to become masters of self-promotion. Granted, it is a bit different from bragging, but it is close enough that a lot of writers struggled with it.

As a writer, you will want readers, published or not. If you want reviewers, you need to attract people to your piece. If you self-publish your book you have to do all of your own promotion. Even if you have a publisher, you will still need to do a lot of your own promotion. Here is the good news. You can learn to become more comfortable with self-promotion right here on Writing.com.

Use the tools Writing.com provides

"The Shameless "Plug" PageOpen in new Window. Don't you love the name? It is just what it sounds like, a place to highlight your writing.
"Please ReviewOpen in new Window. This is a place to request a review, which is another way to attract someone to your writing.

Writing.Com is a COMMUNITY of writers. If you have recently joined our community, you are considered a "newbie". Not to worry, it isn't an insult. It is an indication that people that have been here longer need to lend you a hand so you can have the chance to learn and grow on this site, as we did.

To fully take advantage of learning and growing opportunities, it is wise to become part of the community. The more we get to know you, have chances to interact with you, the more you will become part of it. I will cover some ways to do this.

Favorites/Fans: start building your Favorites and Fans lists. This is easy to do, and it will increase the number of people who will get to know you. All you have to do is click on the "plus sign" in a member's handle. Click once to make them a Favorite, click twice to Fan them. (**special note: your Favorites list is confidential. If you Fan someone, they will get notified.) Your Favorites and Fans show up on your personal newsfeed, and you will show up on theirs.

Newsfeed: you can use the newsfeed as a social network (a lot like Facebook), and you can use it to promote your writing. Always provide a link to any item you want someone to check out, so that they can just click on that link to get to the item {item:XXXXXXX} or {bitem:XXXXXXX}.

Review Other Writers: doing thoughtful, helpful reviews of other people's pieces can go a long way to encouraging people to want to review your writing.

Enter Contests: this is a great way to get noticed. The people who run the contests have "cases" of all colors: black, yellow, blue, purple (what does the case color mean?*Right* "Spilling The TeaOpen in new Window.). Entering their contests allows these people to read and get to know your writing. People seek out contest entries to read and review. The contest owners will often post the winners on newsfeed for everyone to see. Looking for a contest to enter? Check this out: "Contest CluesOpen in new Window..

It might take time for you to get the hang of getting eyes on your writing. Don't get discouraged, and don' give up. It will happen with some effort and time.

Always, always pick three genres for any writing you do. This helps people find your writing! You just might see your writing highlighted in a future Newsletter.

#8 Kudos-I vote you trade in your blue case for purple.

My time reading and following your instruction was well spent. I feel my membership is a privilege and an honor.

Please accept my teacup full of appreciation, tracker

Well, Tracker, I think you made me blush a bit with all that high praise. I am glad you enjoyed my newsletter and found it useful.

I am very happy and content being a Moderator (blue case) at WdC, and I would be very surprised if I am on anyone's radar for a purple promotion, LOL
