Letter from the editor

There are only 18 days left of 2023. Have you accomplished all that you set out to do? Have you considered what you want to do next?

At the beginning of this year I was stuck in a pretty unpleasant writer’s block. Thankfully, I decided to become more active on the site and see what happens. Since then, I have written about 50 new items and ran several new contests and events. Some of them are even good! Not bad going, I feel. I hope that next year will be even better, so I’ve already signed up for a couple of events.

If you haven’t joined yet, a big factor in getting through my writer’s block was "The Contest ChallengeOpen in new Window. [13+]. In this challenge you pick one of the contests listed for that month and write an entry for it. If you participate every month for a year you earn prizes. There is an option to catch up on the challenge all the way from the beginning – like I have – which earns you some major rewards. Whilst the prizes are nice, because who doesn’t like goodies, the best part of the challenge is that it has you write a wide variety of pieces for a wide variety of contests. That kicked my creativity back into gear. It’s too easy to get stuck in writing the same type of item over and over. It’s no wonder that that eventually makes your muse go meh. Trying different genres and styles is fun. Some you’ll only want to try once; others may become firm favourites. You never know until you give it a go.

I am already signed up to "I Write in 2024Open in new Window. [13+]. This activity is in its 12th and final year. To participate and earn badges you need to write 24 items and 24 reviews, according to the given guidelines, within a 12-month period. There are extra badges to be earned by completing four entries within the four weeks assigned to that badge. There’s plenty to challenge you, then, and you can pick and choose how much you want to write each month.

I have also signed up to "Rach's Reading ClubOpen in new Window. [E]. Any good writer must also read. Unfortunately, I have not read that much these past years other than academic texts. It’s part of being a student. I understand this. Still, I miss reading books that are not part of my course work, and it’s good to have an incentive.

If you want to develop some positive habits in the next year, "Habit Heroes Open in new Window. [13+] is an excellent place to explore. You choose your own goals, keep track of your achievements, and you’ll receive support whilst earning badges. I’ve been a member for a few months now and it has made a difference. I haven’t reached all of my goals yet, and some months are better than others, but it’s not that uncommon for me to defeat my urge to procrastinate by thinking of how I can tick an extra box in Habit Heroes if I just get up and do it. I am certain that you’ll see me there next year, hopefully to improve on the goals that I still struggle with.

It’s good to plan ahead. Of course, it’s also important to keep one’s goals realistic. If you overburden yourself it can result in dropping everything that you’ve signed up to. You know yourself best, and what you are capable of. I’m balancing my reading and writing with university and other offline activities. I have no doubt that you are busy, too. That’s why looking around and seeing what will be available is a good idea – it gives you some time to see what you can reasonably give a place in your life.

Whatever you choose, I wish you a wonderful holiday season. May 2024 bring you all that you wish for.
