Groups

Groups are an integral part of Writing.Com. There are groups for many genres, to commit to regular reviewing, or even to discuss life in general. You can find all the Groups on Writing.Com right here.  Open in new Window.

Join a Group

The only way to join a group is to get added by someone who is already in the group. However, not everyone in a group has the ability to add someone. Only those who are at level 11 or above can add new members. To join some groups, all you have to do is email the owner or one of the leaders and you will get added. Some groups require that you fill out a survey. Other groups want to see your writing or your reviews first.

To make groups manageable, every group has the possibility to set up group membership levels. The creator of the group item has level 15 by default. That is the highest level and it gives clearance to manage all parts of the group without any restrictions. Everyone else is at level 14 or below. Check out all the different "Access Levels Within GroupsOpen in new Window..

Creating these different levels of access is very useful because some groups need several leaders to administer it. When sending group emails, it is also possible to filter which membership levels receive the email. For instance, if you want to inform only the group leaders, it's possible to set the email up in a way that it only goes to members at level 12 or above for example.

Leave a Group

It doesn't matter how many hoops you had to jump through to join a group. If you decide that you don't want to be part of a group any longer, for whatever reason, you can easily remove yourself.

In the left Sidebar, choose the second option from the top. *Gear* My Account Click on that and a secondary menu will open. Under My Activity, go down four lines and find Group Memberships. Click on that and you will come to the page with all of the groups you belong to. It does not matter at which level you are a member. In this area, you will see a link next to each group that offers to Leave Group. Click on that and a new window opens. You can leave a short message to the group owner if you want to. On this page, you can either Confirm: Leave Group or simply toggle away if you changed your mind and want to stay.

Do you know how to join and leave groups?

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last Noticing Newbies newsletter "Usernames and HandlesOpen in new Window. that asked How and why did you choose your username and handle? Does your handle change often or never?

Angelica Weatherby- Grateful28 Author Icon wrote: I chose dragonfish for username because I love the fish also called dragonfish with their unique looks. Angelica Weatherby is a pen name for identification. I change my handle a lot. Not guaranteed to be the same for a month at times.

Nice explanation.

Elle - on hiatus Author Icon wrote: Great NL Annette! Usernames can be so tricky!
Originally my username was the first letter of my first name and then my surname. But now I just use Elle which is the name everyone knows me by and also my handle. I don't tend to change my handle, it's pretty constant.

The beauty of your short name is that you have space to leave a message and everyone still easily recognizes you.
