“I always loved Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I always thought I looked like her, so I dressed like her for every Halloween.” -- Sofia Carson

Happy October Romance Readers. October is a busy month. 31 days is NOT enough. *Smile* October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. I’d just like to give a shout out to all Breast Cancer survivors. Your stories are inspirational to us all. Thank you for sharing them!

Fall is picking up steam. The leaves are starting to turn. The temperature is getting a tad cooler. The sunset is getting earlier and earlier. It’s time for pumpkin spice latte and warm apple pies. How do you enjoy this time of the year? A pumpkin spice latte treat? Baking pies? Decorating the lawn? I love decorating with pumpkins and making it look like a graveyard. It’s perfect for treat-or-treaters.

Now, Halloween happens at the end of the month. In fact, Halloween has inspired a whole genre of writing – paranormal romance. So, I thought I’d take a look at this popular romance genre, it's elements and it's troupes.

I found this crossword – perfect for the season! Enjoy!

Letter from the editor

Paranormal romance grew out of the gothic romance genre. Gothic romance authors like Victoria Holt wrote about omens and curses, using a moody atmosphere with supernatural activity, high emotion, an anti-hero and a damsel in distress. Paranormal romance stories takes those elements and sharpens them.

In paranormal romance, world building takes the place of mood and atmosphere. World building involves exotic settings and supernatural elements. The author creates their own world, the rules for that world, and how the supernatural elements interact with the characters.

Omens and curses along with a complex villain can be used to drive external plot to bring the characters together. In gothic romance, the main characters are human, but in a paranormal romance, the characters themselves possess supernatural powers – they can be witches, werewolves, or even vampires. These powers can also cause internal conflict for the characters to overcome.

Common paranormal romance tropes (plot devices used to bring the hero and heroine together) include a human heroine falling in love with a paranormal creature. (Think “Twilight”)

A woman (or a man) moving into a haunted a house and falling in love with a supernatural creature.

There’s werewolf versus vampire – (perhaps some “forbidden love’ here) which is a push/pull for internal and external conflict. Both characters embody paranormal creatures, strong with vulnerabilities.

Another favorite troupe involves Beauty and Beast – where a “beautiful” heroine saves and “ugly” hero.

QUESTION What is your favorite paranormal romance troupe that you like to read?

Challenge: Write a Flash Fiction (1000 words or less) of a human falling in love with a supernatural creature. Submit it to the newsletter and I’ll feature it in my NOV 2023 newsletter.
