Letter from the editor

Greetings my dears!

I am a new editor to the Horror Newsletter and very excited about it. I grew up with a deep love of the genre.

You'll find that I love a good ghost story. I was raised in a small town in a rural area and believe me, we had ghost stories!
Most centered around the Deep Creek region. This is a large triangular shaped area defined by highways. Deep Creek itself was a frontier community that died when the railroad decided to put tracks through nearby Boyd. One cabin is all that physically remains.
Ah but the tales!

One tale surrounds the legend of Sally Bowen. She was a teenaged girl who, while out picking berries, was chased down and killed by Indians. Her grave lies in Deep Creek Cemetery. It is said, that on some nights, one can hear the frantic sound of hoofbeats as she tries once again to outrun her killers.

At one time, there was a log structure on the grounds of the cemetery. It had served as a church/school house. A friend related that he and several of his friends had taken refuge there during a storm. When the lightning flashed, he and everyone else inside could see someone standing in the corner. When someone decided to take a head count, they found that everyone living were standing in the doorway. There should have been no one standing in that corner!*Shock* Alas, fire destroyed the cabin years ago.

My final tale for you is the one of the Blue Lady. I had heard mention of her but never heard the particulars. One night, several friends and I were parked near the one and only gate in and out of the cemetery. (It was quite popular to hang out there along with the entire region.) The night began with another group there as well. They had a jam box and were playing an AC/DC tape. Everytime that tape hit Highway to Hell, it would rag and make the song sound rather spooky. They finally freaked out and left. Later they told me that once they arrived back in town, it played just fine. *shrug* Anyway, I was sitting on the hood of my car and looking out into the dark cemetery. Soon, I noticed a light, a blue light around one of the stones toward the back. It was a globe shape and it moved...up, down, around the stone. It would also appear to get larger and smaller. I didn't say anything to anyone.
I do believe in ghosts, but I also believe that if someone says, "Hey! I see something, blah, blah, blah," that everyone else will see it too. Provocation of the mind and imagination.
One of the guys came over and asked what I was watching. I nodded in the general direction. After a few minutes, he tells me he sees a blue light and he proceeds to tell me exactly what I was watching it do. Another friend walked over and did the same thing. At this point, I was convinced I was not imagining things. Soon the entire group was watching her. Some of the ones prone to the willies finally had enough so we left. Personally, I never had any negative feelings while watching her. Believe me, I've been out there when things more sinister were present.

There are stories such as these in every part of the world. I love them! I especially love when someone can actually track down who the spirit is and why they are there. It's fascinating to me.

Perhaps you have your own local legends. Even witnessed them. I think it makes life more interesting.

Til next month, be scary!

~Nikola
