Spilling The Tea
I get the privilege to edit the Noticing Newbies Newsletter now and again. When I do get that chance, I try to pop back into my imaginary Way Back Machine to remember what it was I needed to know when I was a new member of Writing.Com.
Let's talk about who everyone is here because who doesn't love a good gossip session?
Okay, so we're not actually going to discuss every member. That would be...ridiculous. I'm going to concentrate on the types of members. Let's start with the different colors of cases and what they mean.
For reference, this is my handle: GeminiGem🐾 .
Looking at my handle, do you see that thing that is blue, might look a little like a briefcase or might just be a blue rectangle, and has a little picture of something on it? Mine usually has a fox, but I do change it occasionally. We will refer to that as a "case". Have you noticed that different people on the site have different colored cases? No? That's okay, it took me a while to notice that when I was new. If you have, good job, eagle eyes. Now I will explain why they are different colors.
First, we will ignore the little picture that some people have, like my cute little fox. That is an option called a costumicon. I'm not going to cover them here, but you can see some information on them here "Costumicons" if you are curious about them.
Gray: Registered User. This person has a WdC account. This is the first case you see in your handle when you join.
Black: Registered Author. This person has added the first item in the portfolio (or "port" for short). This change is automatic as soon as the first item is added and saved.
Yellow: Preferred Author. This is a promotion and is considered an honor. Not every member receives this honor. I will refer you to Writing.com 101 for more information. "Promotion to Preferred Author"
Blue: Moderator. A second promotion. There are even fewer people promoted to a blue case, and they have special roles and duties around the site. Here is more information for you "Promotion to Moderator" .
Purple: Senior Moderator This is a rare promotion. I think there may have been a purple case promotion since I joined the site, but if there was it was way back when I was a newbie.
Red: Staff. This includes the The StoryMaster and the The StoryMistress .
So, you want to know what other tea can you get on a person by looking at their handle? Yeah you do, and I'm going to spill it.
Let's look again at my handle GeminiGem🐾 . Everyone has a number in parenthesis after their chosen handle. This number is how many community recognitions a member has received (either merit badges or awardicons) You can click on the community tab in your own port for information on your community recognitions.
Hover to discover. If you hover your cursor over the different parts of my handle, you can get even more tea on me. Go ahead and hover over "GeminiGem". You will see I have been a WdC member since August 31, 2013, and that my username is also geminigem. Please note that many members have different handles and usernames. Originally, I did as well, then I decided to change over to the one-handle/one-username system. I find it simplifies things, which is something that appealed to me.
Hover on the case next. You will that it tells you I am a moderator (which matches my blue case, as explained above), if I am online currently or have wandered away from WdC land, and again states the date I joined the site. Yes, there is a little bit of repetition with the info, but that's how you know it's really good tea.
Now hover on the little envelope. Hint: if it is white, that person is currently logged into the site. If it is gray they are logged out. With your hover you shall rediscover my username and if I am logged on.
Now start clicking on various parts of my handle and see where you end up. I'll let you discover those delights on your own.

Would you like to be featured in one of my newsletters?
I am a regular editor of the COMEDY newsletter and a guest editor of other newsletters. You never know where I might pop up!
I do my initial search for items to feature by genre. If you are not choosing the THREE genres your writing can fall into when you are in editing mode of that item, you may be missing out! It is never too late to update all the items in your port. Genre to avoid: OTHER. |

From my last Noticing Newbies Newsletter "An Inspiration Situation"
Howler of the Moon
I mostly get inspiration from character designs. The character could already have a name and story, or they could be a background character with no story at all. After dwelling on the preexisting character for a while, I would come up with a story that isn't tied to their original lore. Unfortunately, I see the preexisting character playing the role of an actor in a movie I directed. It takes a long time for me to come up with a design separating the original character from the preexisting one.
That is definitely a way to build a story, good job! |
