The Hub

The Writing.Com Main Hub  Open in new Window. is the first page that opens up when you log on. It's there as the first thing you see. However, there are immediately distractions that take you away. In the left sidebar, there are Email, Newsfeed, and Notification notifications. *Facepalm*.

The next time you log on, take a moment to explore The Hub. If you don't want to log out, you can easily toggle to The Hub from the Community link in the left sidebar. The Hub is the second from the top, right below the link to the Newsfeed.

One of the more prominent features of The Hub is that it lists the current official site contest, which is "Short Shots: Official WDC ContestOpen in new Window. right now, as well as link to "Good Deeds Get CASH!Open in new Window. - Writing.Com's own reviewing contest with the biggest possible prizes.

Right below the official site contests, there is a writing prompt. If you like the prompt, copy it or write it down immediately. It changes each time you refresh the page.

Other things to see are Newest Static Items, Newest Books, Recent Review Requests, Recently Awarded Items, Random Reads, Recently Plugged Items, Recently Active Forums, Recent Newsletters, Recently Given Merit Badges, and if you want to see what others have liked, you can find Recently Awarded Items and see whose portfolios were recently awarded. There is even a direct link to "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. titled Recently Listed Activities.

As you see, while it's easy to get lost on our large site, it's easy to find a good jumping in point on The Hub. Whether writing to the prompt, finding something to read, or taking part in an active forum - it can all be done from the landing page The Writing.Com Main Hub  Open in new Window..

How often do you check out the Hub to see what's going on?

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last Contests & Activities newsletter "Read to WinOpen in new Window. that asked What is your best advice to someone who wants to win in a writing contest?

Beholden Author Icon wrote: What is my best advice to someone who wants to win in a writing contest?
Read the rules and other information carefully. Read them again when you've written your entry, to make sure that you haven't offended in any way.
Read any other entries there may be. It helps knowing how high you have to aim, although you should always write your best, no matter how brief the word or line requirement is. Your entry may or may not win but it will form part of your portfolio and it should demonstrate how well you can write for all time.
Be different. Consider your subject from all angles and then write with the least orthodox view on what you're attempting to communicate. Avoid standard plots, opinions, feelings. You need to stand out, having something fresh and new to say.
Easy, isn't it? ;)
