Only I Can Say Something Like That
Are you adept at laughing at yourself? Can you get others to laugh with you?
There is a finesse to self-deprecating humor. There is a fine line between being mean to yourself and bringing forth quirks and flaws with humor and good grace. When somebody has that finesse, it can be some of the funniest material out there.
The appeal of this type of humor is pretty easy to see. This material is part of your life. It just takes stepping back and looking at it from a different perspective. I feel like this includes not only yourself but your family and even your culture. It is all a part of what makes you "you", right?
You can find humor in your family's crazy behavior but it probably wouldn't be appropriate for someone else to make jokes about the same thing. You can poke fun at the quirks of a group of people within your cultural group. but it definitely wouldn't be cool for someone outside of that group to do that. That may be the very reason why people find this kind of humor so appealing.
Can you pull this off with a character? They have the observational humor of an insider but present it in such a way that it isn't uncomfortable or offensive to others. This only works if your character has flaws and quirks, which a character should have anyway so this may be a win-win situation for character development. Your reader gets to enjoy a well-balanced character and a few laughs. |

From my last Comedy Newsletter "You Aren't Tripping"

Been there, done that. The solution? Fly first class! First on, first off, and the same with your luggage, not to mention you ALWAYS get a window or aisle seat. Of course, you pay through the nose for those minor advantages but you get to drown your sorrows in a glass of champagne BEFORE takeoff and you get real food on real plates.
I don't even remember the last time I got more than a tiny snack on a flight. I'm used to eating before getting on an airplane now.
