About This Newsletter

We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause. ~~Ronald Reagan

The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. ~~Abraham Lincoln

In war, there are no unwounded soldiers. ~~José Narosky

I’ve lived the literal meaning of the 'land of the free' and 'home of the brave.' It’s not corny for me. I feel it in my heart. I feel it in my chest. ~~Chris Kyle

Better than honor and glory, and History's iron pen, was the thought of duty done and the love of his fellow-men. ~~Richard Watson Gilder

Freedom is never free. ~~Anonymous

The patriot’s blood is the seed of freedom’s tree.~~Thomas Campbell, Scottish poet

Letter from the editor

This newsletter is an amalgamation of thoughts I've had over the last space of time.

A veteran is a veteran, regardless of the country they defend. They put their life on the line for a higher cause. In America, Veteran's Day is a day to remember, celebrate and thank those who have kept our country safe for us to sleep at night. Every country has its military and militaries require solders - men and women - who keep it going. No one ever 'agrees' that all wars are justified or that all wars are 'right.' But for whatever country someone stands to protect it, those who survive are veterans. Regardless of who wins or loses. Regardless if, in the eyes of the world, the right side won or lost. The soldiers, the foot soldiers, the cannon fodder, the scared and the virtuous, are all defending an ideal even if it is from a very different perspective than one that I might have. In the US, we currently have a volunteer military. Many countries do not. Regardless, a veteran is a veteran having been through the crucible and stood to fight another day in whatever capacity they are called upon to stand.

My daughter served in the U Navy in the Mid-east. I am a US Army Veteran. I served at the tail end of the Vietnam War, My dad fought in WWII, my grandfather, a new US citizen having emigrated from Germany, fought in WW!. Other relatives fought in the War of 1812 and the American Revolution. Further back, they fought in wars across England and Scotland, in France, Germany, and Ireland. At least one person in every generation going as far back as I can track has defended their country over something. When one is in the military, one takes an oath to protect and defend. Even when we muster out, that oath stands. Not everyone feels that way, of course. I do. That's just me.

I will always thank a veteran. Every time. My husband and I buy dinner or lunch or breakfast when we are out eating for a veteran we see there. Always. Every time. Whether we can really 'afford' it or not. Because, as we see it, how can we afford not to?

While many veterans don't like to talk of the worst parts of being in the military, they DO have some stories to tell! Love stories, fun stories, stories of when they raised a ruckess and stories of that time when they ... --these stories are important too and I love listening once they begin talking story. There is a lot we can learn from them!

So this Veteran's Day, thank a vet, buy 'em a cup of coffee or breakfast. Listen to them. Hear them. Maybe donate a few bucks to a Veterans Organization near you!

And I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, anyone who is a Veteran. I salute you all.

Ask & Answer

QueenNormaJean snow?forgetit.. Author IconMail Icon says: Thanks - I always am thinking outside my comfort area. Lately I've been reading short stories by Roald Dahl. My word, what an imagination. They make me laugh, make me cry, make we wonder. A good writer can make you go places you never thought you'd want to go.

DRSmith Author IconMail Icon writes: I give you an "A+" because even at such a young age, you showed a mature sense of LOGIC, and then creative innovation that was not a contrarian resistance to an order, but a valid SOLUTION versus what would have been nothing more than an easy but pointless path for "sheeple" to follow that seems to be the norm for today's society.

:)

oldgreywolf on wheels Author IconMail Icon states simply: Yes.
