Halloween is a Spiritual Festival

Halloween is celebrated on October 31 every year. Most people think of dressed up children walking from house to house and threatening the residents with tricks unless they are given treats.

The tradition to share food items comes from the fact that Halloween happens around the time of harvest festivals. The beauty of Halloween is that it has been secularized and anyone can choose to celebrate it any way they please.

The true origin of Halloween is somewhat unclear. Whether Celtic harvest festivals, the Gaelic Samhain, or a Christian holiday created by the early church, the one thing is clear: All Hallows' Eve, Halloween, or beginning the observation of Allhallowtide is nothing new.

Halloween festivals were common in Ireland and Scotland for centuries before immigrants brought it to North America in the 1800s. Like anything that lands in North America, the modern United States in particular, Halloween has been repurposed into a huge marketing event.

The modern way to celebrate Halloween is to throw money at it. Customers in the USA will throw a collective $10 billion at costumes, candy, house decorations, and apple bobbing. The movie industry has several franchises based on Halloween and the horror aspect of it.

There are many ways to celebrate Halloween.

Followers of ancient Christian Halloween traditions will go to church services and light candles on graves. Some Christians will eat a vegetarian meal consisting of apples and potato pancakes.

Those who call it Samhain will begin their annual celebration of the mid-point between the autumn equinox and winter solstice. Those who go all out and aren't under any fire advisories will have bonfires. Tables will have extra settings to feed the deceased ancestors.

No matter what you do, don't call Halloween "Helloween." If you are on this site, you are a writer. As a writer, you know where words come from. There is no way that All Hallows' Eve was spelled Ell Hallows' Eve.

Have you been told that Halloween is something unholy, evil, or to be scared of?

Ask & Answer

I received this reply to my last Spiritual newsletter "Personal ReponsibilityOpen in new Window..

Quick-Quill Author Icon wrote: This is a deep subject. The Golden Rule comes to mind, but I think it's deeper than that. Right and Wrong come to mind. Everyone of us are given a responsibility to make the right choice. Your choices show your "responsibility" This also is driven by your personal spiritual relationship with the creator. Are you instilled with His spirit so those choices reflect Him? You have a responsibility to make good choices, but you also have free will. What you do with that free will is what makes you a "responsible" person and one that people trust.
