Sometimes it's a challenge to write. In that case, sometimes it takes a challenge to write.
There are a few writing challenges here on the site, all of which can be helpful for writers. There are a number of contests that have prompts every day, every week or even once a month. Having them remain consistent can help because they provide writers the chance and motivation to write something on a consistent basis. If you have a contest you enjoy and want to keep entering, that is definitely good inspiration to keep going and to get stuff done. I have done this in the past, tried to enter a contest many times in a row. I haven't managed the every day, like challenging myself to enter Writer's Cramp for an entire week, but it's certainly something you can do in order to get bits of flash fiction or even poetry created over a span of time. You could even try to enter every day for an entire month if you really want to push for a writing every day type of situation.
Aside from contests with their prompts for inspiration, there are also a few different writing challenges that happen throughout the year here on WDC. Sometimes I miss the challenges, forgetting to sign up in time. Other times, I start strong then fizzle or get distracted with stuff offline. Other times, I make it through and get a whole lot of writing done. I like those the best. There are a few different ones that happen in particular that I've enjoyed over the years.
For an almost daily (with a few breaks during the month) challenge that also prepares for the month long writing challenge of National Novel Writing Month is the NaNoWriMo Prep Challenge. In this activity, which is held in October, there are tasks for each day that can be outlines, character development, setting and even some short scene writing, all with the goal of helping to prepare a story to try and write the novel in the following month (November). It is helpful in particular for those that like the plan and prepare ahead of time. It can also be a helpful practice for those that don't always prepare to write their novels and for new writers who aren't sure how to go about getting ready to write a novel.
Another activity that is used to encourage writing on a regular basis is I Write. It has had a few different variations of activity and rules over the years. It is a nice combination because it requires you to write and review each week. In the past, it focused on writing entries for contests, getting one done each week for three months. After posting the entry, you then had to provide a review for the person who posted right before you. This time around, it's a little less restrictive with the focus on writing, whether for a contest or not, along with providing reviews. I like that it not only encourages getting writing done, but it also gets people interacting with each other and providing feedback on the newly created items.
No matter which method or activity you join, it is helpful to have inspirations or deadlines in order to get a little writing done. Not al of it will be great. You may or may not ever publish anything. The key point for this type of activity and the contests is to start of simple. The whole goal is simple: write.
