BFFs
I am cognizant that this is the Romance/Love newsletter. I mean, I had better be, since I signed up to edit it. I have decided to be selective in my recognition of the title. For this issue, we are going to drop the romance part of the title and concentrate on the love.
Why would I do that, you ask? Maybe I'm a bit of a rebel, and maybe I just think that not all love is tied to romance and it is worth chatting about non-romantic love and its part in storytelling.
There are, of course, a few types of non-romantic love relationships. We are going to talk about the importance of love between friends, or close friendships.
Sure, sure, romantic love interests have that sexual tension thing going for them. It can make for interesting reading, but I actually prefer stories that have characters who have strong friendships. The relationship doesn't have to rely on the "will they or won't they" vibe.
Friends can have adventures together. They have each other's backs. They KNOW things about the other. A friend's foibles are less likely to be detrimental to a relationship (although, certainly, they could be). A person isn't committed to a friend like a spouse or a boyfriend/girlfriend, but that doesn't make the devotion or love any less important.
Some of my favorite books are from Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Does Stephanie have a love interest? Nope, she actually has two! That is all well and good (better her than me), but her best friend is one of my favorite characters. Lula is a big, beautiful black woman who used to be a ho. (Her description, not mine). Lula and Stephanie are fabulous together. I find myself much more interested in their shenanigans than Stephanie's on-again, off-again romances with the two studs in her life. I would even argue that if it weren't for Lula and the other assorted cast of friends, the books would fall flat with just the romantic interests.
If you want to give your story and your characters more interest and more complexity, I suggest introducing a good friend and see what happens.

Thank you for featuring my July contest.
I read some of those pulp romance novels in middle school and early high school too. Like you, I found them quickly unreasonable. Now, however, I think it would be fun to find such a short story in AWWW Romantic Contest. If such a plot can get told in 1,000 words.
