Creating Just For Fun
Sometimes when I'm surfing our community for something to read, I'll find a puzzle, survey, quiz or In & Out. If I have time - I participate in the activity and I do try to leave a review if I see something could be improved. It's a fun little thing to do and it lets members know they have people visiting their portfolio. No one likes a lonely portfolio. This is part of community participation on the site. The more you participate, the more people will visit your portfolio.
In & Outs are relatively easy to create and have a lot of options for formatting your item. The instructions are here: "In & Out" A hard part is where you format your In & Out and determine how the page will display. If you use the In & Out for contest submissions, don't forget to require item IDs. Allowing Self Deletion is nice, this way a member can delete their post if they find a mistake. If you're not sure what a setting will do, create the item and post a few tests before making the item public. You can delete all the test posts before you open the item. One personal suggestion is to mention that the area to add to the In & Out is at the bottom of the page.
Then promote your item, plug them on the "Activities @ Writing.Com" page, invite members in "Writing.Com General Discussion" or link it when greeting newbies over on the "Noticing Newbies" page. Think about using In & Outs as a billboard for your group, posting announcements or letting members promote within your group.
So next time you're working on items for your group or for the community in general, think beyond the standard static item and message forum and see what other fun things you can create.

Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (February 16, 2022)" question: Do some of your contest entries turn into short stories or novels? ?
tybo777: Yep
N.A Miller : sometimes... Depends on the material
Starling : Many of my stories can go either way. I will say though when I am doing a contest, I usually have to cut out words to fit into the parameters of the contest.
I get a story in my head for a contest and then start writing, generally not knowing where the story is going. I am the true definition of a pantser. If left to my own devices most short stories will end up being around 2500 words.
I have some stories in my "Odd writing" folder on my computer which still have more to say, the characters have decided to sit back and not tell me yet. The longest piece I've ever written is around 60k.
LinnAnn -Book writer : Holidays over, not by a long shot. lol My house is all decorated for St. Patrick's day. I'm not Catholic, but I've got Irish in my blood. lol
Bob : Has happened
Anna Marie Carlson : It has been short stories, but I submitted my first chapter for a possible book. I don't know if it would be considered a novel or not. |
