An Epic Struggle With Procrastination
ou may or may not have noticed that I have been absent from WdC for a while. If you didn't notice that's okay, it (probably) wasn't your turn to watch me. Anyway, let's just say I fell into some deep quicksand that was covering a rather large social media rabbit hole. The harder I fought to get out of it, the more entrapped I became. The good news is I finally found my way back to WdC.
I did attempt to come back a few times prior to this, but I kept getting pulled away again. I feel confident that I made it stick this time courtesy of a big list of shiny new WdC deadlines. In a moment of brilliant insanity, I committed to a series of long-term, don't-want-to-fail-because-I-take-this-kind-of-thing-seriously deadlines.
This commitment was a little scary considering my recent track record here. I have to keep in mind that I came back to WdC because I love to write. I did it because I had been missing interacting with my friends and friends I haven't met yet. I committed to those frightening deadlines to force myself to stay where I belong and to do what I truly love to do. Sometimes, we have to make ourselves do what is right for us, I guess. Humans are such contrary creatures.
o get off to a solid start, I was a good little writer and started my prep work. First up, I came up with a subject for my writing. Whoo-hoo! Since I am a confirmed and dedicated pantser
A pantser is someone who, “flies by the seat of their pants,” meaning they don't plan out anything in their story, or plan very little. Freedom is an important value for pantsers. They don't need or want a detailed outline. (from: https://thewritepractice.com/plotters-pantsers/) |
I had no idea where to go with the subject. Not to worry. I found some fun memes to include for inspiration (for my readers, yes, but more for me).
Rubbing my hands together in anticipation, I opened up my WdC notepad. Just that small action caused my fragile writing ambition to wither and die. It turned out that my writing muscles were weak from lack of use. To make matters worse, my muse was sitting in the corner immersed in Tik Tok videos. I am pretty sure she shot me an inappropriate hand gesture when she thought I wasn't looking. So rude.
I took a deep breath, flexed my typing fingers, and promptly searched for something else to do. Wasn't there something I need to buy on Etsy.com? Did the Chihuahuas need their ears cleaned? Oh hey, those dust bunnies under the bed weren't going to leave of their own volition, you know. Yep, we're talking avoidance behavior on a grand scale courtesy of an advanced case of hyper-procrastination. After a promising start, I was back to my old tricks with the dubious support of a surly and co-dependant muse.
I had committed to those deadlines, though. My confidence in this motivation technique was unshaken. Stirred a bit, perhaps, but essentially unshaken. I would write. I would! And I had better get a move on because that first deadline was swooping in with a license to kill. I clicked out of the internet shopping site. What, you thought I was really going to avoid writing by cleaning my house? Have you even MET me? If anything, I would use writing to avoid housework, not the other way around.
he only way to strengthen muscles is to use them, so I am going to write whether my muse is on board or not. She'll come around, eventually, she always does. Maybe she'll find motivation from those impending deadlines as well.

Here is an item CHOCK FULL of deadlines!

Editor's note: When I was searching for items to highlight for this newsletter, I was looking for items that were about procrastination and/or deadlines. What I found were poems and dark short stories. Interesting. I went ahead and included them in this comedy newsletter because they fit my subject matter and there is always a glimmer of humor, even in the dark stories.
Why not drop these authors a review of their story or poem? After all, this is a subject we can all relate to, right?
