Introductions

Since this is my first Spiritual NL as a regular editor, I thought I'd spend a little time talking about my own spirituality. I was raised in a not-particularly-religious family and spent large chunks of my youth as (in order), an atheist, an agnostic, and a theist. I'm currently a non-denominational Christian, and my family and I attend a small evangelical church which grew out of a network of small-group house churches after spending a number of years at a megachurch.

One of the projects that I'm currently undertaking is reading different translations of the Bible. I've used the New International Version (NIV) for years, and read it completely through for the first time last year. This year I'm reading the New Living Translation (NLT) and comparing it against the King James Version (KJV), and the plan is to read 5-7 different translations over the next five years to find the one that is the best fit for me to continue reading and studying after that.

While my current path as a Christian informs much of my spirituality, I consider comparative religion something of a hobby. In college, I took enough philosophy and religion classes to earn a double A.A. in both Liberal Arts and Humanities, and I also find a lot of truths in the teachings of Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Taoism, and a number of other religions and philosophies.

My editorials will tend to focus on what I'm currently exploring in my own spirituality, so that means that there will very likely be an emphasis on a western Christian perspective. To the extent that any readers would like me to focus more on spirituality from other faiths and other areas of the world, please let me know in the feedback box at the bottom of any of my newsletters so I can shape my editorials to meet the spiritual needs and interests of as many readers as possible.

I look forward to sharing my thoughts on spirituality with you over the coming months! *Smile*

Until next time,

Feedback from "Spiritual Newsletter (October 21, 2015)Open in new Window. about idols:

Alexis Kaye Wright Author Icon writes:
Hello Jeff. Is there a group within writing.com that we can share our faith as done in this newsletter, or would I need to submit something to this newsletter to do so? Also, that is an awesome newsletter about idols. I am guilty of putting my health before God sometimes and I realized that recently so now I am trying to find a balance between working on my health (since my body is a temple for the Lord and the Holy Spirit) and keeping God #1. Balance, however... and self-discipline are 2 other things I need to work on. Anyhow, your words are very thought provoking in a good way!!

Quick-Quill Author Icon writes:
Jeff your NL is filled with wonderful insights. I think of them more as inspirational notes than anything to do with writing. However, I took note and thought how would that pertain to writing. I love to write stories, It would be my idol if I had the time. As the years have passed, my writing has taken a backseat to work, and making ends meet. If I had an idol its self preservation. I have cut out bits of time for a writers group, and going to writers conferences, That has encroached on family time, hubby's not too happy or supportive of my writing interest. I still look to God to hold me up when time has slipped away. I pray there will never be anything between Him and me.
