Contests & Activities Newsletter by Dawn

Sometimes it feels like the well is dry when it comes to inspiration and the need to write. Times can be busy with the outside world but contests and activities can be helpful.

Letter from the editor

There are a number of times when the well of creativity seems empty or dry. I love writing but with the hectic way the world is and all of the offline responsibilities that exist it can be easy to let the joyful creative world slip to the back burner. Inspirations feels so easy at times and other an impossible task requiring a quest of amazing feats.

It is natural as a writer to have experiences of ease and difficulty with the craft. At times, we have to let the world of fiction drift away as we focus on life and that is okay. It is okay to not write, to lack inspiration or interest.

And there are other times when we can search for the well agains. Contests and writing activities are good sources of inspiration or quests for the elusive task in creating stories.

One good option is the prompt. The contests are helpful for me because they give that particular specification. I don’t necessarily need new ideas for novels or stories. Instead it helps me to provide focus. Plus there is a deadline. Makes it easier instead of getting it done whenever you get around to doing the writing.

Another option is to look around you for an idea. Even something mundane can be created into a fantastical or unexpected story. Even something like the color gray can spark options. Does the color make the person side or think of rain? Is it their medical uniform color? Maybe they like it and find the color beautiful. It all depends on what creative approach you want to take.

Look around, rest a little, then check out the writing activities and contests here on the site. Have fun and enjoy getting a little creative as you write.

Ask & Answer

Where do you get inspiration when it feels like the well is dry?

Last month, I wrote about the things I missed with contests. Here is a comment sent in over the topic:

Contests are my principle route to survival in WdC. Of course I'll enter many contests in December.
