I remember back in my high school and early college days, many years ago for the first set of degrees, there was a divide when it came to genre writing versus literary. Some people found the literature section to be superior to the different genres, include fantasy and science fiction. Genre focused classes were less common for literature reading. I took a sci-fi lit class, which was unusual to find and there were only 4 other students in the class. However, the class for reading classic literature had over 20 students each semester.
It's not just the academia world either. There is also the matter of personal preference that influences some bias with certain people. While I have always enjoyed fantasy as a reader, most of the people close to me haven't been as interested in speculative fiction or reading all that much either. My dad has never cared for fantasy or science fiction stories, though he does read action novels on occasion. My stepdad is similar, in fact they like the same series. However, he also loves Harry Potter and has read them all. My mom isn't much of a reader except the occasional romance novel, so my focus on elves and other creatures along with the varying stories in these genres was not as shared with those around me.
There can be a challenge when focusing on a genre even if others around you doesn't understand or appreciate the topic in the same way. One aspect is the social side to the writing world. It is nice to have someone to talk to about stories, whether it's the one you are writing or if it's a book in the process of reading. Have someone to share with helps to bring the enjoyment on a different level.
Now, while the methods of reading and publishing have had some developments over the years, there have been some changes in the regards to fantasy. Television that once struggled when creating speculative fiction shows have instead made many fantasy stories into movies or series. Even with less time for some of us to read, others are still finding their way to the magic of speculative fiction.
But there will always be doubters or people whose preference don't quite match and that's okay. Sources like this site can help if there are people around you don't understand the world we live in with the fantasy stories. Beta readers can be found online and even just someone to chat with online can help. Or there are even contests to practice our craft.
If you have support with other people in the world relating writing speculative fiction, that is great. If you don't, it will be okay to because you have others here on the site. Keep writing and reading speculative fiction. Share it when you can. Enjoy it alone when you can't. Write more. |

Do you have someone close who isn't fantasy or doesn't enjoy the make believe type of tale?
"If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities." - Maya Angelou
"The more we're governed by idiots and have no control over our destinies, the more we need to tell stories to each other about who we are, why we are, where we come from, and what might be possible. Or, what's impossible? What's a fantasy?" - Alan Rickman
