Flash Fiction Elements
Writing a story in less than 1,000 words can be more challenging than one would expect. Taking a story and distilling it down to the most important elements can be hard. Which parts do you clip out when editing?
In some of the articles I've read about writing flash fiction offer some advice. One of the points is about your characters - keep them to a minimum. Too many characters or scenes are better suited to short stories. Keep your scene description to the absolute necessities.
Another point was - fix your story on one moment in time. Carrying your reader further will again put you in the short story region. In my opinion, the best flash fiction does something the reader isn't expecting. It has all the elements of a story and makes use of each part of action in the best way possible.
Also, don't forget your title, and in WDC, the item brief description. The brief description field allows 90 characters and I've never seen a contest that includes it in the word count. Make it count, use it to help your story.
Give flash fiction a try, there are many contests that are geared toward or accept flash fiction.
And as always, Write On!

Excerpt: Each month will have a theme for the books. I will give you some suggestions for books that fall under that theme. You can then read one, two, or more of them. Alternatively, if none of them sound like your thing, you can choose your own book(s) that is linked to the theme I have given. Once you have read your book(s), I would like you to write a review and link it in the forum. The reviews can be product reviews β bpr: xxxxx, stand alone items β bitem: xxxxx, or book entries β entry: xxxxx. Alternatively, you may write a review directly into the forum.

This month's question: What successful edit suggestions would you give someone trying flash fiction?
Answer below Editors love feedback!
Last month's "Action/Adventure Newsletter (December 22, 2021)" question: What 2022 advice do you have for your fellow authors?
StephBee : Reflecting back, I wrote more in 2021 than I did in 2020, but for me, it wasn't enough. I have days/or a week where I'm free to write, and then boom, I'm not free to write. My advice would be if you can't write - read. Read what interests you. Find an avenue where maybe you can write something short or something you're passionate about. I created a sub stack, which is a new way to get out thoughts and ideas. (https://stephbbee.substack.com} Don't abandon what works for you, but come back to it when. you can. I have stickies and notepads with scribbles everywhere. Just little doodles to release the urge when it's overwhelming. Just some random thoughts but I hope they helped.
Monty : The only advice I have is to do what you like and do a lot of it.
wdwilcox: "Don't get lazy. Time is fleeting and just writing something good is not good enough."
tybo777: Just pray that itβs a better year than the last.
LinnAnn -Book writer : Don't have tall mugs of eggnog by your keyboard.
Scifiwizard Retired : Follow your path not one someone else already took. Discover ideas and inspiration from what catches your eye rather than what other people wrote.
TheBusmanPoet : Be kind and compassionate to others.
LorenIsOneOfMyNames : Don't be afraid to speak your peace, respectfully of course.
s : Advice for writers? 2 things:
1) write
2) do your own thing, don't compare yourself to other writers
John & James Wegner : Don't give up. Success can come from the most unexpected places. Good post. \m/ Forge on! \m/.
Bob : 2022 is the future: write the future.
elephantsealer : To all authors of the world: keep composing pictures and images through your writing; it is your privilege, your honor, and yours alone to advance the knowledge that is wanting to come out of your brains!!!
Patrick : All great characters "live' because you put you inside them,Scrooge, ahab,Ulyseus..to be fully realized as you in the deepest and most important aspect of whoever you are seek to fill in the overwhelming and sometimes screaming voice inside of you that the image accolades an educational and career oppurtunities though, engaging and curiously, if you we me or whoever reading this will find they are substantially satsisfying an challengeing and fuffilling ,as are realtioanal oppurtunaities with other created beings,"a man or woman shall leave his mothter an father and the two will become one," nice?,Yes.. however; listen,or not listen free willers,,,, there either is or isnt, a potent an clarion voice at times whisperinag an intermitantly screaming in you, is there not more, yes i say there is.Find it.or you will have to smile an pretend that your meanigfull pursuits are a front for an unrealized and satisfied soul. in the new year knock and he will answer you seek and you will find, cry out with a sincere and seeking voice that is not fashioned in a book by a character you created. If nothing is there, you are safe, however other intrepid souls have admittd the debit of fufuillment have found it an so call you to do likewise.dont be angry at me, them, they are bond to truth. do follow..Iam a sinner, for more than these run on sentences, yet i bid you in the new year success as authors writer, pretty tenuous,, jus sayin, but above all oh soul if yer listnein, seek the persoalist God/ Jesus.he awaits,yes.. to this i do my literary recurring theme and in my soul i swear hes there. patrick, Merry Christmas, oh hail you my infant King...Iam a sinner, thank you, for your mercifull advent. amen
care-full: Keep on it.
DevilsBargin : Know your audience. When you write a story. Write it with an audience already in mind. For instance do you wish to appeal to children, your adult, fantasy enthusiasts, or are you trying to appeal to a higher age group like elderly are thrity to fifty something. If your writing fiction what genre are you trying to write and what are the ideas in that genre your readers will be looking foward to seeing. In conclusion the truest advice I can give is this be a fan of the type of stories you chose to write so you can understand what sort of ideas your audience is looking foward to seeing the most.
Anna Marie Carlson : 2022 is a brand-new year for coming up with new ideas, imaginations, true stories. Things happen that may set someone back a bit; not having a new computer yet has slowed me down but I am still writing and will submit new things and enter contests when I can. My message is: Don't beat yourself up when something goes wrong. Get back into the swing of things as soon as you're able. Pick yourself back up and start a new chapter that's new and different.
