About This Newsletter

January, which is named after the Roman god Janus, is the month of both reflections and regrets. It is the month to look back, at the things we accomplished and did not accomplish, and forward to what we want to accomplish. This does not give us much information about Janus himself. Who was Janus?

Letter from the editor

Janus was more than simply a Roman deity with a head that had two faces. Apparently he was the king of Latium living, in a palace on Janiculum hill, somewhere along the banks of the Tiber River. According to legend, he was an extremely pious king, which is the reason--that upon his death--he was given the duty to guard the door to heaven.

Another interesting fact, is that Janus, also known as Ianus, was not borrowed from Greek mythology. The reason Janus had two faces was so that he could look both backward and forward without turning his head. This suggests that he could see both the past and the future at the same time, which might or might not be a good talent to have.

Since he is associated with beginnings, transitions, and endings: How would you use Janus in a story? Would you write a story about him as king of Latium? Would be about how he interacted with Romulus? Would a temple of his cult play a role in your story?

Have you written a story about Janus or Ianus? Do you want to write a story using him as a character? Have you written an essay or an article about Janus? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, please submit it to this newsletter. The deadline is February 11, 2022. The rating should be 18+ or less.
