Letter from the editor

You probably joined Writing.Com to write.

But WDC is more than just a place to showcase your writing or improve your skills. Community activities, hosted and sponsored by members and the site, add a unique facet to the writer's experience on WDC.

Call WDC what you will -- it's at the very least an involved and passionate writing community. I empathize community because that's what attracted me and kept me coming back daily. Seldom did I miss a day of checking in to see what's happening on the Newsfeed, or on favorite forums, groups or members. One aspect that I really enjoy are the many activities one finds on site.

The most common types of community activities are Contests and Fundraisers, which are further broken down into Auctions and Raffles.

*Bullet* Contests: Contests are competitive activities where members can submit entries and compete against one another, usually for prizes. They're either member-hosted or official contests hosted by WDC. You can showcase your stories, poems, or even images while earning tangible rewards for your work.

*Bullet* Auctions: This fundraising activity involves the host and other members to donate packages on which other members bid with the highest bidder at the completion of the auction taking the package. Funds raised support specific groups, memberships, or even individual members as determined by the event host.

*Bullet* Raffles: Also a fundraising activity, raffles involve purchasing tickets (or other countable items), and then having all of those purchased items entered into a random drawing for a winner. At the completion of the deadline, the host enters all the tickets in a drawing with the winner selected randomly (for example, such as by Virtual Dice). Payouts are determined by the host, but usually consist of part of the proceeds going to the winner and part to named organization or group.

A few points to remember, the host determines the event theme, rules, prizes, and eligibility. Unlike many writing contests sponsored by magazines or writing organizations who often charge "reading fees" or other admission charges, WDC contests are normally free to enter. Obviously fundraising events charge nominal gift point fees to play. Also, eligibility for official WDC contests require a paid membership.

Check out "Community ActivitiesOpen in new Window. for more information on these activities.

Here's a sampling of some active events that are worth a look. Check the rules and eligibility of the specific event.
