When was the last time you tried something new? A new food, a new hobby, a new game, a new genre to write in… Are you loyal to certain brands, or are they irrelevant in your life? Are you someone who’s always up for a new experience, or do you like everything just the way it is?
I confess that I am a creature of habit. I used to be more daring – I’ve done a survival camp and have canoed down waterfalls, for example – but nowadays I like everything to be nice and comfortable and, above all, secure. That does not help when you’re trying to find a new place to live in a different country. There are many factors to keep in mind, and whatever you do there’s always the risk that after all that effort you end up not liking your new home, or area. I know this all too well. I have made an international move before.
I also used to be that person who was willing to try whatever was put on my plate, but over the years I have developed some food intolerances which have nipped that in the bud. I am now someone who carefully reads the ingredients list and who hesitates to order a new dish at the restaurant because you never know… It’s pretty boring. Then again, there have been a few times when I tried something new to me and it was disgusting! At least there’s little risk of that happening again!
I’d like to find a new hobby, but I have no idea what. My mom’s got into diamond painting, and my dad’s trying those colouring books for adults, but neither of them appeal to me. I don’t think I’d have the patience. I have zero musical talent, my drawing skills are nothing to write home about, and I’ve been stuck with a major writer’s block for several years in a row. I think it’s about four years now. If I ever write another newsletter about how to overcome a writer’s block, don’t follow my advice because I’m clearly no authority on the subject!
I am enjoying my studies. I switched to Forensic Psychology this academic year and so far, so good. I have especially enjoyed the topic about whether or not a machine could have a mind, and what would be the ethical implications if so. It makes you think of what a mind actually is, going back to the philosophical idea of mind/body dualism versus the notion that the mind and the brain are one. Most people in the world believe in some form of dualism – anyone who believes in any form of an afterlife. If the brain and the mind are one, there cannot be an afterlife; if one dies, so must the other.
I’ve also renewed an interest of mine. Back in the 90s and early 2000s I loved Formula 1. I was a big Mika Häkkinen fan. Over the years, however, I became bored. Michael Schumacher won race after race, and there was no real competition to enjoy. Fair play to him, of course, but I moved on. Recently, however, I’ve been getting back into it – also because my sister’s become a fan – and I find myself supporting another Finnish driver, the rather unlucky Valtteri Bottas. It’s been fun trying to catch up on who’s who and what’s what, and discussing the sport with my sis (who supports Daniel Ricciardo).
I’ve also got back into gaming. I love Stardew Valley. It’s the kind of life I’d like to live, really – a little cottage and some space to grow my own food and keep some chickens and such. Okay, I wouldn’t want to go into the mines and fight monsters, but a nice little community of friendly people, and the freedom to arrange my own days would be amazing. As it is, I enjoy my virtual farm.
It’s too easy to get stuck in our habits and routines. That is especially the case when living a busy life. Adding something new to the mix every now and then can do us the world of good. It doesn’t need to be anything big. It can indeed be as simple as trying a new food, or renewing an old interest. I fully believe that we need all the joy that we can get in this life; let’s give ourselves the best possible chance at finding it.
