I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.~~Maya Angelou

We are all members of THE best writing site in the world. It's a place that fosters learning, encourages us to review and share our thoughts on the pieces we read, and lets us become a part of a phenomenal community. It's our home away from home and a place we find friends. We are a big family thousands upon thousands of members strong.
But it needs to be more than a place where our material gets reviewed and we can enter or run contests. As writers. we are all at a myriad of levels of accomplishment. There is always someone who is better and always someone who needs help and encouragement. And anyone can be that person. Our input is important! Our extra eye is vital.
A different perspective on a word choice can allow for, perhaps, extra clarity. It might offer a stronger word or help ESL writers enhance their vocabulary. We all need input. More, we benefit from reviews whether it is a happy ego boost or a thought-provoking reaction. Giving reviews can help another writer or poet to ascertain whether or not they have gotten across the point they are trying to make. This is not always as easy as it might seem given the global audience of Writing.Com!
If, in the process of writing reviews, you vary your comments, you won't run the risk of writing many reviews that all feel exactly the same. Comment on what feels fresh or new. Comment on what might have seemed off. Make it a reflection of you as a person and sometimes, this fosters a further exchange that can lead to one or the other helping on a broader basis. Or a developing friendship. Or finding someone who truly 'gets' your writing and will work with you to help raise your (or their) writing to a new level.
At which point, a new mentoring relationship is born! What a wonderful way to give back and share what we have learned on WDC! I have three mentors on WDC who have taught me so, so, SO much! I, in turn, pass that along when I mentor someone. Talk about a win-win process. With time and practice, it gives us all more confidence in both ourselves and our writing abilities.
It also tears down perceived barriers between case colors. A black case I discovered recently is a brilliant writer. Another newbie black case is a massively published writer. One could only wish to be as successful as she is, yet she's here for input and reviews just like the rest of us!
So, put in the effort to review what you read. Find someone who might need/want some extra help. Give of yourself because what you have is unique to you and you have the ability to inspire!
