Much of the world is living right now under a sweltering heat wave. Where I live, temperatures are 20-30 degrees higher than normal. I normally love summer, but this is too hot even for me.
As uncomfortable as all this heat is, it would make a great setting for a horror story. Horror stories often take place under cover of darkness, but blinding sunshine can also supply some horror. One classic Twilight Zone episode, "The Midnight Sun," takes place at a time when the earth has fallen out of orbit and keeps moving closer to the sun.
Long periods of extreme heat often cause tempers to heat up as well. Many studies have shown that crime rates, especially those of violent crimes, tend to rise with the hotter temperatures.
In highly populated areas, heat waves can lead to power grid failures that can plunge a city into darkness at night, leading to more crime and violence.
When extreme heat is accompanied by drought, as it often is in my area of the world, crop failures and water shortages can result. High temperatures, drought, and high winds can also lead to a higher incidence of wildfires, which are a perfect setting for horror stories on their own.
Your story might take place in a desert, during an abnormal heat wave on this world, or on a world that is always extremely hot. The heat might have a natural cause, or might be caused by an evil supernatural entity or alien being. Your characters might need to escape a raging forest fire or an erupting volcano. Or they might have even fallen into hell itself.
Something to try: Write a horror story that takes place during a heat wave. |
