Have No Fear!

This newsletter is for those of you interested in getting started hosting a contest or activity. You know me, I always have a few words of advice. And here we are again!

The first one is RESEARCH. Say you want to create a Counting Carrots Contest. Browse through the contest listing and look at what contests are currently running. There may be a Energizing Eggplants contest running that is very similar to what you would like to create. While copying someone's idea might feel complimentary, communicating with the other host might be best. And who knows, they might be kind enough to help you get started.

Also, be sure your contest or activity isn't coinciding with a big site contest. Not everyone has time to enter everything, so help yourself by running your activity at a different time. November with NaNoWriMo and December holiday fun are very busy times on the site, but they're also busy times offline.

Then there's FORMAT. We have a ton of how-to type items out there to help you get started. I'm not going to cover the basics in this article, but have a look at those kind of resources and make sure you have what you need to host a fabulous contest.

I include ADVERTISE in my advice because its important to get the word out there. BidClick is a way to advertise, but there are others like your newsfeed and various public places to list your fun. Ask your friends to help you put out the word. Be sure to advertise a couple weeks before the start, not everyone logs in every day.

Most of all, my best advice is to have fun. Even if you don't get a lot of people participating, communicate and make them feel welcome. Many contests and activities have a slow start but build up a following. Hang in there!
