Hello, everyone. I am ~ Santa Sisco ~ .. I'm your guest editor of this Noticing Newbies newsletter.
I aim to ensure you have a smooth transition into the site. I still remember my first day here. "Bitem?" Do I have to be a computer programmer to put my writing on here? Forty-eight hours later, I realized it was a case of easy when you know how!. My biggest mistake when I joined was that I didn't take the time to read the "Writing.Com 101" . I was excited and wanted to do everything on the same day. Sound familiar?

The most asked questions by newbies in my emails are, “How do I navigate this site?” Or, “How do I find something I was looking at last time I was online?”
You may have guessed that writing dot com (WDC) is a little more complicated than many other writing sites. It took me a while before I managed to understand how to find what I wanted on here. I will stick to the basics, and you will eventually work out a system that works best for you. I use a simple way to both find things and revisit the ones I like.
Finding something on WDC is straightforward using the navigation bar on the left of your page.
“Browse By Type” and “Browse By Genre” are the two selections that will find just about anything you are looking for while here. When I was a newbie, I found the browse by type the most useful as I could easily see any forum I had been looking at recently. I used the browse by genre to find contests to enter and to read other member’s entries. After a little bit of self-confidence, I also reviewed the entries. I now use the “Community” selection as it has the contests listed there as advertised by the contest owners. The “Community” selection is also where you will find the "Noticing Newbies" forum. There is also a section headed “Read a Newbie” where I visit to get items to mention and recommend in my newsletters.
While you are in the left-hand menu, why not give the “Activities” a click to see if anything interests you. You can spend hours browsing the site and finding more and more things to read and do.
Now for the bit that many newbies stumble over. “How do I find something I was looking at or want to visit again?” The simple answer is to make it a Favourite when looking at/visiting it the first time. This is covered in-depth in the site "Writing.Com 101" at "My Favorites and Fans" . Once you have made it a favourite, you can easily re-access it from your right-hand menu. Another way to keep an easily accessible path to items you like is to note them in your notebook. I keep a list of forums/groups/items in my notepad for those days when I am busy or want to use my system. It is best to save them as entries in “Item” or “Bitem” format so you can click on them to access the item. "Video: Linking to an Item"
If you are still struggling with navigating this site or finding anything, you can always ask for help. You can make a post in the "Non-Technical Support Forum" , "Writing.Com General Discussion" , and "Noticing Newbies" to ask for any help. As a Moderator, I can confidently say that Moderators can find answers for you, as we know where to look to find out where to find the answer. So you can always email a Moderator and ask. As I am the guest editor for this newsletter, I will also add that I run a group (Not an official WDC group) that caters for newbies and any help you may need, including one-to-one mentors for those of you who might find the site a little overwhelming when you join. "The Newbies Academy Group" can be accessed via the "Newbies Academy Registration - OPEN" .
Whatever you do, don't give up! This site is the most amazing community, and with a little effort from you, you will be amazed at how far you can take your writing with the help of other members. Write On!
