Letter from the editor

This is going to be a relatively short newsletter, I’m afraid. I always aim to write something interesting, but I’ll most likely fall short of that this week. The reason is that I’ve broken my glasses. I’d placed them by my side, ready to give them a clean. Reached forward, made a clumsy move and landed on them with my elbow at the perfect angle to snap off both arms in one go. If I had to replicate the move I am certain that I could not. They’re clean breaks, making it difficult to try for a temporary fix. Thankfully I’d already made an appointment with my optician for later this week and, thankfully again, it has not been cancelled due to the national lockdown we’re under. As things stand, however, the world’s a blurry place. Not helpful for my studies. Not helpful when writing a newsletter, either.

It’s been an interesting month, hasn’t it? Sure feels like a blur. The US election, the vaccine progress… As said, we’re in a national lockdown once more here in the UK, although it’s not called a lockdown, I don’t think, and schools are still open. It’s a sign of how times have changed that I’ve seen advertisements for fashionable masks, masks that ‘make a statement’. It sometimes amazes me how quickly we adapt and how rapidly any changes are absorbed into our consumer societies. I don’t have a ‘statement mask’. I just use plain black ones. But, I guess, whatever makes things easier for people.

It’s a time when writers are using their influence to do good, be it reaching out to their readers to make their lives more pleasant, or offering support for charitable causes. On Halloween I sat wrapped in a blanket listening to Neil Gaiman reading some spooky stories. Gaiman (@neilhimself on Twitter) is also asking us to enter drawings to accompany his poem What You Need to be Warm, in support of refugees. You can find the details here  Open in new Window.; there’s just about time still.

Maria Vale (@MariaValeAuthor on Twitter) is supporting efforts to save the lives of wolves. @RomancingRunoff has an auction coming up with over 500 items from a wide variety of authors and other artists, in support of voting organisations. I have seen some pretty interesting items already, from cover art to annotated novels and the chance to become a character in future novels.

How are you using your voice and influence? There are a wide variety of good causes out there who need support now more than ever. Wherever you are on the political spectrum, wherever your passions lie, there are opportunities to do good, and you can make a lasting difference.

I had hoped to submit some art to Neil Gaiman’s project, but I need to de-blur for that. Perhaps you can submit something in my stead.

Whatever your projects, I wish you well, and will see you next month.
