Letter from the editor

Science Fantasy, as you may have guessed from the name, is a blend of science-fiction and fantasy. It's different (and more fun, in my opinion!) than Hard Science Fiction because it's not constrained to a million scientific rules, like those that govern our world. It allows you to come up with something completely out there, and make it work, because your world doesn't have to follow every rule of science out there.

Rod Serling, probably most famous for The Twilight Zone, said this when comparing the two genres, which I think is awesome:

Science fiction is "the improbable made possible." Fantasy is "the impossible made probable".

And, in my opinion, Science Fantasy is the perfect blend of the two.

Want to write about what would happen if a vampire was on a spaceship?

Want to write about some far-off world that can only be explained as magical?

The above isn't quite sci-fi and isn't quite fantasy, but it fits very nicely into science fantasy. (And if you do write in this genre, or are planning to, then let me know, because I love it!)

Looking for some science fantasy to pass the time or escape into given *gestures to world*? Or maybe looking for some material to watch or read in the downtime from NaNo? May I suggest some of these science fantasy books, films and TV shows?

*Film* Star Wars

*Tv* Star Trek (The Next Generation is my personal favourite)

*BookStack2* Dune by Frank Herbert

*Bookstack3* A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine

*Bookstack* The Black God's Drums by P Djèlí Clark

*Film* 9

The world ellipsed into a single strand, narrowing before my fleeting eyes.

All I have to do is imagine where I'll be in a second, and take a step forward-

-you?

Time and space folded itself, allowing me to 'teleport' a pace away from where I was standing, befuddled and perplexed as to what had happened during the one second that I was gone.

Quite some time has gone past since the event of the Void 10 years ago. This reoccurring vision of war and bloodshed plagues my mind. The skies were red with fire, and the ground soaked with blood. All I could hear was the sounds of metal clashing, projectiles ricocheting, beastly roars, cries, screaming. It hurts to even think about it sometimes.

For my last mission I was Ty Cobb. Including myself, six of us had been ordered to prepare for a battle against alien demonic forces. All of us had agreed to choose the essence of a great baseball player to add to our positronic brains; everything else was identical.

“My wife and I were on our way to the Andromeda belt, when we were ordered to change course to Earth. I am the Storymaster by the way, and this is my wife…come closer, dear.”

His wife was just as ‘uninteresting’. Dressed in the same shiny red suit, she could have been a school teacher for all they knew. “Hello,” she greeted. “I am the Storymistress. We were sent to provide something you all sorely lack.”
