Following A Prompt

Often in judging contests, I find authors who become literal with a prompt. Yes, when contests have prompt words, they need to be included in the story. What I'm talking about is two things, interpreting the prompt and my story standing out against the crowd.

Let's say the prompt picture is a windmill. There will be all kinds of entrants that spend their entire word count describing the windmill and the countryside. Why? Everyone competing in that contest has seen the exact same picture. So have the judges. If you want to stand out in the crowd, don't let the windmill be an ordinary windmill. Maybe it's a secret machine to send messages to space. Maybe it's a disguise for a Nike missile silo. Perhaps it's a giant telescope that flips open at night! Maybe a little old lady serial killer lives in it. Okay, you get the idea.

The Writing.com birthday celebrations are underway! Be sure to take a look at all the contests and activities, and note requirements and deadlines. You don't want to be disappointed and run out of time. Also, be sure to review and recommend your favorites to friends! Let's be positive. Let's have fun! Write On!
