Hiya all.
It came to my mind when I was explaining how to make a static item when someone posted a poem into a forum. I was reminded that as a newbie the term "static item" might sound odd especially when I think of static as noise on a radio or static cling! . So let's look at what kind of items you could choose to create as your first...or next item!
Most of us begin with a static item though I have seen many create interactive items. It is exciting to put your first musing out to a public audience!
So here we go:
Static Items
Put your story, article, or poem in this type of item. Chapters can be added here too until you have upgraded account when you can use a blog or book items. You have the ability to save and edit these as you go, until you are happy with it.
If you find a home in a group, you can opt to have others edit as well.
Surveys
As upgraded members you can create surveys for a number of purposes. eg. "Invalid Item"
Campfire Creatives
This choice allows you to invite people to write a story with you. As a group, you will take turns in a round each of you add something to the campfire.
Polls
Do you want to know which type of chocolate people prefer? Or how many WDC members have created ebooks and how many went for traditional publishing? You can create a poll... for fun or information and stats!
Interactive Items
Want to start a story and have other people continue it, interactives are great for "choose your own ending..or adventure". Anyone can add to your beginning and then add several potential ideas for continuation!
eg. Play here:
| | Pass the Write-Baton (18+) Write what you wish, do your best, and pass the baton. 1000 gps prize per addition. Enjoy! #1530602 by Joy |
Crosswords
This is like a survey only its designed to test people on their knowledge and share your research.
eg: Ty this creepy one!
| | Invalid Item This item number is not valid. #2216834 by Not Available. |
Word Searches
I was thrilled to find some of these to play with and to create as well. A great vocabulary builder.
eg. "Creatures from Greek Mythology"
Images (for upgraded members and above)
If you are upgraded paid member, it is possible to create image items, which will have ID numbers so you can link them in signatures, emails, reviews etc.
In and OUTs
These are designed for people to put in information such as items they would like to have reviewed, contest items, a list of things they and you love or hate etc. It is fast moving like a newsfeed. You set the number of items you want the list to show and when your In and Out gets full it drops the oldest one from the list to make room for the new one.
eg. Try this one:
Quizzes
This is like a survey only its designed to test people on their knowledge. I find it a fun way to record research of interest or of importance for my writing.
Try this for fun:
| | Invalid Item This item number is not valid. #2184081 by Not Available. |
Madlibs
If you have a funny bone, or like to read strange and unexpected tales, this is for you. It is a story where you leave out nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs and give the reader a chance to fill out the blanks and make the story their own. eg:"Anthros, Monsters, Aliens, Oh My!"
Product Reviews
Now this is something that really helps keep so much of the website free. This is where you review books, music, movies etc. on Amazon.com. You pick the item and enter the ASIN code into the input box on the page. It will link the item to the page and you can write your review. Writing.com gets paid a little bit every time someone buys something through your review.
It is fun and supportive to review our WDC's member's published works too. You can find some here "List of Published Books by WdC Authors " and a fuller list here:{item:https://www.writing.com/main/authors/action/in_print}. Add yours!
For the specifics on each of these choices, make sure you check out "Writing.Com 101" ! Put it on your favourites for quick reference.
So what was your very first item? Or, if you have not yet added one, what will you choose?
Make sure to post it in the response to this newsletter!
Write on and have fun whatever you choose!

My first entry was a poem in a static item and have participated in most of the choices above. I have not created a campfire or survey but have played in them. What was the first item you posted? How many types of items have you tried out?
Thanks for commenting on my last newsletter on reviewing. "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (July 8, 2020)"

I have been learning many things for five years from my reviews here on WDC. I acquired some general cultural information, writing techniques, English language vocabulary, and known many other people's mentalities.
A review should be polite, honest, and helpful. Even when the reviewer disagrees about what he has read, she/he should express this with tact and managing not touching the author.
Great issue indeed!
Thanks. I am so happy you are learning so much. I admire those who can work in two languages.
