Hail everyone. This week I was thinking about a couple of topics as I wandered around the Newbie fields and browsing all kinds of items! Three little tips popped that I would like to share.
WDC is a wonderfully eclectic community that is set up for many people to participate, share their distinct talent and if desire, socialize with others from many parts of the world. A plethora of activities and tools allow for this to happen smoothly and co-operatively.
For example, see our Browse by Type, or Browse by Genre Tabs! Just like a book store, we can go browse in section that thrill and interest us! Clicking on a genre will take you to pages filled with items in the genre....
IF writers have identified their stories, poems, essays, items...with the applicable classifications. I have been touring and find a lot of items that say OTHER... which tells nothing about the content or topic.. Granted there may be a place in a book store for a bunch of things unrelated... but usually each item could be classified someway.
SO, it would be soooo beneficial to use that section when you open you static item....or edit it..... to choose a couple of genre categories that apply to your piece. There is room for three. (sometimes I struggle with the third...and sometimes one fits just fine!
WHY? When folks browse that genre, they may find yours!! If you write horror with a sci fi element....use both categories as it may appeal then to a wider readership/ It also helps you learn to identify your own work..should an editor want to know.
It is a great time saver for everyone too!
The section on choose a type is easy too... Poetry? Novel? If I go to the poetry page, where I do go A LOT, your piece may show up there for me to pick!
Another tool to be aware of is RATING.... yep, each item needs to be rated. Again just like in a book store, you might want to check out Graphic content.... or NOT. Even movies are to be rated so we are aware of potential content that may not be suitable for all ages or interests.
WDC creators try to allow everyone their space to create as they will....Keeping in mind all ages and interests. The rating is a way to be considerate of readers and the ability to choose. We have both young and older readers and we all have our interests and perhaps content preferences. I have a friend who can have really bad dreams if she reads graphic content or horror as she is sensitive to that sort of thing where I can take it or leave it. So it is just caring of us as writers to rate our work appropriately. I know there are things I would not wish to read...yet a title may be so appealing. Also there are others who go looking for Horror, erotica etc! So again there are benefits to rate well!
Here is how WDC Content rating works:
"Content Rating System (CRS)"
As a reader, did you know you can also apply a blocker... so as not to even see what you think is not appropriate for you or potential young readers. I did not know this for a while when I first joined.
Under MY ACCOUNT: Account settings, Block content

Though Reviews should be written for all readers... even you as a reader can Filter reviews of items you prefer not to see on the public feed.
I , as a Moderator, have all my filters off, as I often credit reviews and as I said, reviews should not have inapt language anyway. I may see some miss rated items and help authors to adjust for the benefit of all.
To see what filter you may have on go to
https://www.writing.com/main/my_feedback/action/rrs
and on the top right, you will see a little tab: filter! check it out. I had no idea about this until I became a group leader and had to credit gps to reviews and would miss some because I did not see them. Had to change my filter quick!
Lastly, I love to see grey cases turn to black.... simply doing a bio block, bio or adding a little item to your port... you become official author! So be brave and post...even if you have been around awhile and not taken the plunge. Why not go for it? We won't bite!
Enough said for now about my observations. Whatever you do...write and have fun!

It's great advice for newbies to update their bio block and provide more information to help others get to know them. Great resources too! I am not a newbie, but I went and checked out my bioblock and tweaked it a bit to be more current and up to date.
