Little Ships [ASR] The miracle of Dunkirk is remembered by an old survivor. |
HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary Reviews" First Impressions: That was a very emotional story. The four English lads saved more than one little boy’s life, they managed to stop the orders to attack from getting out so the troops on the beaches were never attacked. Historically probably not entirely accurate, but it made for a great story. The heroes, including the young boy, were very brave, and you described the characters and their relationship very well. It was easy to imagine them as they rescued the boy, just as afraid as he was because they were all still children really, young adults at most, but ill equipped to be thrown into battle. I liked the way you foreshadowed what would happen. You mentioned early on that one of the soldiers never made it home, and when Clint said, Take nothing for granted--down is not dead, I got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. The scene was well done and again, I could imagine it well, the grenades exploding, the smoke - you painted a very vivid picture there. Suggestions: The story was very polished and I didn’t notice any errors. I do have one question though, and that is regarding the part where the lads enter the room to make sure the German soldiers are dead. Would they have checked for pulses, or would they have simply shot each one in the head to make sure? It wasn’t like they needed to be quiet, and they had enough ammunition left (as George emptied his clip into the German after he shot Owen). Checking if they were alive seemed an unnecessary risk to me when the alternative would have been quicker and safer. Final Thoughts: It’s just a small issue and I might very well be wrong here. It didn’t detract from the story, which was very well told. You posted a link to the contest where the story won first place, and I was wondering if the prompt was the cover image. As it’s the official contest that changes a couple of times each year, the prompt is unfortunately long gone, but I was curious what inspired this tale. It was a great read! My review has been submitted for consideration in "Good Deeds Get CASH!" .
