Hello Beholden Author Icon

First impression:

From the title and intro line, I can tell that a man by the name of Tanner has inherited a train ticket. I am curious to find out whether the train ticket can still be used to travel somewhere, or if knowing the destination will tell Tanner something about his family history. The word "last" in the title hints at something ominous.
A tidbit from my life: my youngest son took the train with some friends today. I am a little worried, but I am happy for him. They only went to Los Angeles, not too far away, but it's a big deal to me.

What works:

The story developed nicely in my inner eye. I could see Tanner and all of his adventures. The mystery stayed preserved all the way until the very end when it was revealed what it meant.

What needs work:

THe room was quite crowded *Right* The

looking at a document spread out before him *Right* One document doesn't really get spread out. It should be more than one to spread them out.

Final thoughts:

The ending of the story leaves me with questions. I wonder why Uncle Gregory picked Tanner for the dubious honor of receiving The Last Train Ticket. Even if he only met the lad once, there had to be something in Gregory that would have made him dislike Tanner that much. The only thing I can think of is that the ticket is a sort of pact that Uncle Gregory made to save his own soul, he would supply one upon his own demise. Tanner ended up with the ticket by random chance. Uncle Gregory could have picked any other relative. Spooky to the end!
