Chapter #5

Lunch for the Lizard

by: Naomi Verhan Author IconMail Icon
You decide to turn your attention to the rustling of a nearby bush. As you look on, a seagull knocks you down, but flaps away quickly, seeing something more desirable in the distance. You gather yourself on your towel and look on to find that a marine iguana has emerged from the bush, and is padding its way over to you.

As you observe its approach, you begin to remember a certain class you took about marine biology...in that class, you covered marine reptiles, and this guy was one of them. You also remember that there was this one smart kid who alway asked questions. The one you're focusing memory on was definitely important for where you're at right now...

"Ms. Conway, can marine iguanas eat meat?"
You sighed, thinking that they were exclusively herbivores.
"Well, they do have a nutritional requirement for protein. It's not outside the realm of possibility." the teacher said.

Before you can react, the reptile has already grabbed you. Seeming almost reluctant to eat you, it slowly and teasingly takes you into its slimy mouth. All around you, the tongue quivers, as if it was tasting you. Then, it moves you to the back ofthe mouth and begins to swallow you quite slowly. Your head moves into the throat first, then the rest of your body. It takes a bit, but you finally arrive in its belly. You find the odor of its stomach to be quite plesant, consisting of plant material. You relax, taking in the unique scent of its belly and eventually falling asleep, never to wake up. The lizard has just taken in its protein requirement for the next month, and it couldn't be happier. As for you and your vacation, though, this spells...
