His careful preparation seemed to pay off, at first.
After the calls to his nephew and his next-door neighbor, he handled the final details, including writing out by hand a mailing label that he stuck onto the box. He felt a tingle of anticipation as he realized that, very soon, he would be no bigger than one of the letters making up the address on the mailing label.
"No cold feet now," he said aloud.
One of the last things he did was to secure a hundred dollar bill on the table, weighted down by the salt shaker. With payment for Tommy secured, he moved on to the final details.
The shipping container was already packed with the essentials, including the vital container holding the antidote to his shrinking formula. The scientist has also sliced a small tear in the cardboard wall of the box, which would permit his entry after he had reduced himself to the size of a bug.
Still, he hesitated. That final step left him a little intimidated. Was he quite sure this was a good idea?
Then, the thought of seeing his nephew in gigantic splendor sealed the deal. He uncapped a small glass tube, upended it and drank. Within seconds, he also shrank.
He wanted to spend more time marveling at the gigantic scale of everything in his kitchen, but he knew the necessity of getting inside the box. He didn't have to wait long, and his entire body tensed when he felt the vibrations as a giant, presumably Tommy, entered the backdoor into the kitchen.
In moments, he felt a terrific lurch as the teenager swept the package off the table. And, with just that ease, his journey began.
For his part, Tommy performed his task admirably. The trouble all started at the post office when the carton, added to a pile of mail in a large bin, tumbled behind the large container and was missed when that day's mail went out for delivery.
The tiny scientist's only hint of trouble came from the fact the package remained motionless for such a long time. As curiosity and boredom took hold, he decided...
