Riders

    by: Bmao Author IconMail Icon
Distressed by the eerie silence, you cry, "Um...hi?" They remain silent, but the rider on the white dragon finally speaks. "You're a dragon rider right?" he said, raising his eyebrow. "Yeah..." you respond with a long, incredulous scrowl. Not wanting to reveal anymore, you tuck your wings in further.

The elder rider directs his dragon forward, examining you with experienced eyes. He must have seen combat somewhere before, you think, noticing his scars. "What is your name rider?"

You are taken aback, and need a few seconds to formulate a normal-sounding name. "I'm G'jar, and this is my dragon Drakanth!!" you reply as naturally as possible. "G'jar and Drakanth huh?" Drak mutters to you, turning toward you. "Well yeah we gotta blend in remember" you 'think' back to him.

"Don't think that we didn't see you fly in from 'between', or didn't notice the wings you have G'jar" says the last rider snobbishly. Nope, you got caught all right, but did that bastard have to make it so obvious. You unfold your wings, they'd been starting to strain anyways. "I didn't think I'd fool you anyways. Drakanth and I went 300 thousand turns 'in between'" you answer quickly. The three riders balk, unable to swallow such a large number.

"But it would be nice to know just who I'm talking with" you utter, before they can say anything. The rider on the younger bronze dragon gave a derisive look, as if you had violated some aristocratic code. His counterpart on the smaller white dragon gave you a slight smirk.

"I'm Lord Jaxom of the Ruatha Hold, and by mere accident, became a dragon rider when I impressed Ruth" the rider on the white dragon says, without a hint of regret for his impulsive, but noble actions. That alone already put him in your good book.

The white dragon gave Jaxom a affectionate look, which meant a thought speech conversation. You smile, Pernesian dragons always gave unintelligent, but soothing responses to their riders. "Good thing I'm not a Pernesian dragon huh?" Drak comments jokingly.

The second rider flew forward with a haughty expression. "My name is F'lessan, son of weyrleaders F'lar and Lessa, and my dragon Golanth, heiring from Mnenemeth and Ramoth" he introduces, stressing his importance. You knew F'lar and Lessa basically ruled all of Pern, and understood from your readings how they had saved it from destruction from Thread.

That poor inbred sap, having to use parents to pull up his reputation, you think to yourself. F'lessan frowned, since you had made little effort to conceal your displeasure with that snotty aristocrat.

Lastly, the older rider came forward. "I am F'nor, half-brother of weyrleader F'lar and cofounder of Benden weyr, and this is my dragon Canth." You stare intently at him. If he were the tough, suicidally brave rider from "Dragonquest," you'd have taken him in a heartbeat.
The other two guys? Maybe, but they still looked a little raw for actual combat.

After a bit more conversing with the riders, F'nor announces, "There is no question that you, G'jar, are not from here, and consid--"

"So you're gonna be taking me to Benden so the weyrleaders can hear me out right?" you finish for him. F'nor's face drops with an annoyed expression. "Yes G'jar, that's right." F'lessan smirks. He must have been hoping that mommy and daddy would discredit you in front of everybody. You'll show him.
