Despite their loud yelling and drunkenness, the boys heard the creaking stair. Joey, remained hidden in the shadows just out of their sight, but they knew something is going on up there. Fortunately for Joey, just like none of them were willing to give up their seats to pick a movie, nobody was willing to get up and investigate.
They huddled to make a decision about what to do next, whispering below what Joey can hear, though he's sure he heard mention of a scary movie. Joey, for his part, tried to think fast. From experience in their old home, Joey knew that he'd be able to make it up the stairs without further creaking, but getting back to his room or any other would be even louder than the first noise.
