While Marc was in the kitchen, Joey carefully slipped further down the stairs. Once halfway down, he'd be able to have a clear view of the whole living room. He quietly got into position and made sure the lights were out in the upstairs hallway so he'd be in shadow. He knew from experience that if Marc caught him, he wouldn't be invited to join, so he thought at least he could watch and learn.
From his angle on the stairs, Joey saw all the boys tight together on the couch. His dad's armchair had been previously reserved by Marc, by sacred fraternity ritual (or the knowledge that Marc would be dead if anybody spilled beer on that chair). With four sizeable guys on a couch with three cushions, things were a little tight, but none of the guys seemed to mind being that close. It was also clear that none of the guys were going to give in and go to the floor.
All of them seemed to be loudly debating about what to watch, trying to read the DVD titles from across the room, knowing that getting up meant losing a seat on the couch permanently. Some of the mixed up titles they shouted out and argued over ended up being pretty funny, and it became hard for Joey not to laugh. He was able to contain his laugh, but shifted position on the stairs and accidentally put his knee on the one that creaks.
