When Billy finally stands still and I gather my wits about me I look up. This time I’m staring up at two faces. Billy’s and his dad’s, Steve.
“Billy its just an action figure someone lost in the sand” he replies.
“No, dad, he’s real. He talked to me.”
“No Billy, its just a toy. It can’t talk. It’s not real. Its fake, see” and Steve’s hand reached into the bucket snatching me up.
“OW ! HEY BE CAREFUL THERE !” I shout, surprising him.
He let me go and I fall straight down into the soft sand between his feet.
“See I told you.’ Billy said. “He is real.”
As I dug myself out of the sand I looked up as Steve slipped his foot out of his flip-flop then held me down under his toes. “Not so fast there little guy” he said.
“Hey get off me!” I cried, with just my head peaking out from under his toes.
“Settle down, I said” he commanded then reached down and plucked up from under this toes. I dangled from his pinched fingers until he dropped me into his sweaty palm.
“Can we keep him?” Billy asked.
My head practically spun around off my head. “What? No ! You cant keep me ! I’m a person not a pet !”
His dad ignored my comments. “Well I did promise you a Hermit crab as a pet, but if you want to keep him instead, I don’t see what not.”
Hear that I freaked and jumped down out of his palm in the hopes of escape and obtaining some real help in getting back to normal. This time I landed on Steve’s Flip-flop. Instinctively he lifted his foot and planted it right on me. The wit was knocked from my lungs.
“DAD ! You Squished him !” Billy cried.
Steve slowly lifted his foot to expose my flattened form on the waffled foot bed. He felt terrible, until he saw me begin to regain my shape. Apparently the chemical reaction that shrank me made me pliable too.
“Look Billy, It’s ok. See”
A huge smile came across Billy’s face as he sees he has a new pet. A wicked smile crosses Steve’s as he realizes he may have one too.
“Now lets see where you can keep it son” he said, again referring to me as an “it”. I began getting a very uneasy feeling.
