Final shrinking.

It was, to say the least, tragic. The device had originally been meant to shrink individuals down to size while storing the extra mass in a pocket reality. When the device ended up zapping everyone in a 10 mile radius down to one centimeter, it did so without doing anything with the extra mass.
So you literally had hundreds of tiny human beings one centimeter wide who possessed the mass of normal sized human beings.
It was a mercy that they were all killed instantly in the process.
It was also a mercy that the labs where Bob and Hailey worked was in a very remote area. But the introduction of all these super concentrated mass people created what was in effect a giant sink hole, with a ten mile wide radius and hundreds of feet deep. Reporters, rescue workers and scientists from around the world were mystified, having no clue what caused this.
The secret government agency that Bob and Hailey's company worked exclusively for filed away the results for later use and quietly made sure there were no other records of their experiments.
