“Isabelle, I am afraid to go with you. If you must tell your parents you must do it alone. I will wait here for you. It’s the best I can do.”
“Fine, then, Daniel. I will go to the castle now and you keep low. I understand how it must feel to imagine you might be blamed for your father’s death. When you see your mother again maybe she can answer a few questions. I wonder where she is.”
“Maybe, just maybe, she had to go with whoever killed him. If that is the case then I don’t think I will be seeing her again very soon. Oh, Isabelle this is more terrible than what I first thought.”
“Fear not, Daniel, this will work out. Do you still want to wait while I go and tell my parents? I will have to think about how I am going to bring up the subject.”
“Do it at a time when they can listen without any interruptions. They will be able to advise you on how to handle the situation better that way…maybe during a meal. ”
That evening Isabelle was back at the stables ready to break the news to Daniel about what her parents had said in response to the murder.
“Daniel, are you in here,” she looked through several stalls before she’d called out.
“I’m up here in the loft. I fell asleep. I am exhausted from a night of worry and distress.” He came down the ladder and was by her side before she could respond.
She reached up and patted his shoulder out of concern for his wellbeing. “I hope you sleep better tonight. You are alone now, aren’t you? Your sisters must be with your Mom.”
“I figured as much; come on, Isabelle, tell me what your parents said to you about the murder.”
“They were greatly saddened, and wondered how you were holding up. I told them about your mother being nowhere around and they thought that odd. They are concerned about you being alone. They are going to talk to some of the servants and see if they can get them to take you in till your mother shows up, at least. Do you think that is something you would like to do? It’s much better than staying by yourself. They are also going to get someone over to your house to dispose of your father’s body. They figure you might need someone to help you this way. Is that right?”
“Tell you parents I am grateful for their help. I guess that would make it easier.”
“They are also going to send the police to inspect the body and see if they can find out who did this to your father.”
Daniel didn’t want to go to his house again until his mother and sisters came home. It was too weird for him to be there where his father was killed. Besides, he needed to see if he could hunt down his family.
