Chapter #7

Twilight Thoughts

    by: Unknown
Kouji's icy eyes snapped open, glittering and shimmering somehow in the very dim light, reacting to the sound, or lack there of, around him.

There was nothing, really, nothing at all was alive around him. There should have been the occasional rat or bug scampering about the cave floor, but now, in the cavern room he was in, there was nothing but silence.

The warm, dancing flames of the fire pit had long since gone out, but in the back of his mind, Kouji wondered if the flames were really eternal and would just go on forever and Beliamon had to cause them to extinguish. Now, as a result, it was just a little too cool for Kouji's comfort. Kouji had to huddle up and bury his pale hands in his pocket.

He looked up at the skylight to observe an ashen gray cast sky. Not a cloud was up there, it was all uniform and bland. Kouji wondered and began to doubt that the skies were like that every day when the now-ruined city, Amon Ra, or whatever Beliamon had called it, was flourishing.

Kouji felt sleep pulling at his conciousness again, much to his annoyance. It might have been the only quirk his sleep patterns had: some days he would sleep perfectly, but on some nights, usually on those when he was somewhat distressed, he would wake up involuntarily at the heart of night or a waking twilight hour and stay awake for about an hour. He would start contemplating and worrying, only to fall asleep and forget it all, even after he had woken up.

For about an hour, Kouji napped on and off. If Takuya or J.P. were here, he could just look at their wristwatches and figure out what time it was. It felt like three o'clock to him, but with that sky neither bright nor dark, there was no way of telling.

During that hour, Kouji could feel the room begin to warm up, and warm mist and fog began to pour from the skylight. It was at this time when Kouji arose from his straw bed, holding himself up and straightening his back with two hands while he lay his feet out, sprawling apart.
He was fairly confident that his friends would come and rescue him- not that Kouji needed any rescuing in the first place, he was just fine by himself, could probably find a way out of this sticky situation all by himself, and would find his way back all by himself... well, at least, that's what Kouji wanted to think.

Long, drawn out yawns filled Kouji's mouth as he started to lay back down, his hands resting on his stomach. The boy in blue started to frown down on himself.

"Well, you really did dig in last night, Kouji," he whispered regretfully to himself.

"And you really shouldn't have," he told himself.

"And if she came in her today with a frying pan and offered you a heaping breakfast, would you be able to resist?" he asked himself, hoping to find the answer himself.

He felt really bad that he had caved in last night, although he HAD shown some moderation and didn't scarf down the whole meal- at least he had given resistance towards his odd captor.

"And now you're sorry?" Kouji smirked at his own feelings. Suddenly, his nerves gave way with a loud rumble from the belly. A reluctant smile crept up his face which soon loosed and widened with glee as it took form. Soon he was in food fantasy...

"And you know just as well as I that it was so goood..." Kouji sighed with delight. He continued to grin, as his eyes closed and he descended into a dreamlike table full of delectables.

As Kouji turned his head in his half-sleep, a stray strand of straw tickled his nose and caused his eyes to snap open for the second time this morning- in a matter of seconds, Kouji was out of his self-induced trance.

He was upset with himself for being hungry, but Kouji couldn't blame himself. It was just a natural thing. People DO get hungry if they don't eat properly, after all. However, he had to look at the facts cut and dry:

He had already accepted Beliamon's first meal, now he faced the problem of drawing the line. Kouji didn't want to die of starvation, but he didn't want to trust Beliamon either. Besides, he was starting to put on a little bit too much weight for his own comfort recently. Perhaps he would eat just the crusts and crumbs- the bare bones, what he needed, and just enough to survive.

Kouji decided not to pry any deeper into his thoughts. Sleep was starting to return to him; he just needed to give it a rest.

Kouji shuddered at his own pun.

He had a feeling he wouldn't wake up until morning (which would hopefully be a little warmer), maybe he'd sleep in some... although he had a faint hunch that sleeping in could only be a wistful thought and he'd be woken up again sooner or later by the only other resident of the temple.

Sure enough, Kouji could only enjoy a few more hours of sleep, because about an hour after sunrise, his slumbered was abruptly terminated by...
