The Contest of the Cake

    by: Mizu Author IconMail Icon
Shinya smirked, the fires of competition dancing in his youthful eyes.

"Forget the knife!" He shouted, throwing the aforementioned utensil behind him where it bounced off the wall and fell to the floor with a clatter.

Shinya then, much to Takuya's amazement, began digging into the monstrosity of a cake with only his hands.

"Shinya! W-What do you think you're doing?!" Takuya exclaimed, setting his own fork and plate aside.

Shinya paused for a moment and grinned up at his older brother, chocolate and frosting strewn all across his face.

"Eating my birthday cake. It takes to long to use a fork." He replied simply while Takuya just blankly stared at him. "I'd start eating to, if you want to win that is."

Takuya was about to speak up that Shinya was being stupid, but then he saw Shinya's eyes, an unspoken challenge.

Takuya gulped. And there was still no way he was letting his midget of a brother show him up when it came to eating, even if it was his special day.

Sweating a little, Takuya pulled up a chair and began stuffing himself as well. He had to admit; his mother definitely knew how to pick out a cake.

Takuya glanced up to see how his brother was faring and was disappointed to see that he was keeping up with his older brother quite nicely. If there was one thing about the Kanbara Brothers it was that they liked their food.

Fortunately, though Takuya was indeed a vacuum for food, he burned quite a bit of it off when he played soccer. Therefore, Takuya had remained quite thin all of his life. Though lately, he HAD been slacking off of practice, and he HAD been overeating perhaps just a bit...that's actually why his parents had been trying to limit his food intake as of lately, but Takuya had noticed any change in himself. HE hadn't gained any weight, and it wasn't like he was going to blow up to 700 pounds overnight.

Takuya rolled his eyes at the thought.

Soccer was also the one thing he had that Shinya didn't. While Shinya was most definitely the brainy one, he didn't have an athletic bone in his body, and preferred spending his free time indoors. Due to this, Shinya was a little bit thicker than Takuya, an had a few more curves, though with an appetite rivaling his own, Takuya wondered how Shinya had kept from inflating to the size of an elephant.

Now that Takuya thought about it, it could have been that, while both boys appetites were tremendous, Takuya ate more fatty foods, while Shinya had a more balanced diet, though he obviously had a sweet tooth from the way he was practically inhaling his birthday cake, like most small children did.

Takuya quickly glanced at the rest of the cake and growled.

He had caught up with Shinya, the young boy having a head start when Takuya had been slightly startled by using his hands as utensils, but the boys were now neck and neck. Both had devoured about a third of the bottom layer of the cake and were still eating with no signs of slowing down soon.

In the far recesses of his mind, Takuya cursed himself. He'd gotten himself into a real sticky situation. And there were still four layers of the cake to go.

He just hoped that wherever his mom was that is was crowded.

3 hours, 2 gallons of milk, and 4 layers of cake later...

Takuya groaned as his tried to massage his belly and relieve it at least somewhat from the pain it was currently in.

Across the kitchen, Shinya belched. The younger Kanbara brother was in no better shape compared to his older brother and was stretched out on the floor also rubbing his distended belly.

Takuya, in a similar position, almost felt sorry for his younger brother.

They had finished the cake, the giant, gargantuan, beast of a cake. It had taken two gallons of milk and all of Takuya's willpower, but he had done it; and he had won.

Shinya had conceded defeat halfway through the second to last layer, both had slowed down their pace considerably since the beginning of the contest, and Takuya had been left with the pleasure of devouring the last layer, though it was quite small- about the size of a normal pie and thinner than the other layers.

'Well...maybe not pleasure...' Takuya thought and strained to get up as his stomach gurgle. He had known he had won once Shinya stopped eating, but had felt it necessary to eat the last bit of the cake to illustrate his victory to Shinya…. looking back now, perhaps it hadn’t been the best idea…

“I’m never going to eat anything again…” Takuya moaned, finally managing to sit up.

Takuya then gulped, after taking in the kitchen, Shinya, and himself.
The kitchen was a disaster zone. There were pieces and crumbs of cake and frosting almost everywhere and Shinya had spilt a milk jug once leaving a rather large puddle of it trailing off of the table and into the floor.

Shinya and himself didn’t look any better. Both of their clothes were chocolate-stained and their faces were still covered with frosting and cake. Not to mention that their stomachs were stretched to capacity with cake and milk and had long since freed themselves from their constricting nightshirts.

Suddenly, Takuya panicked.

‘I cannot believe…. that we ate the WHOLE cake…Mom and Dad are gonna be sooo mad…’ He thought as he frantically tried to clean up the kitchen.

Ironically, and much to Takuya’s misfortune it was at that moment that his parents decided to come through the door, presents piled high in their arms and with a screech of “Happy Birthday, Shinya!”.

Then they saw the mess. The crumbs, the milk, the frosting, Shinya practically passed out on the floor, and Takuya smiling cheesily in the middle of it all and looking as if he had swallowed a watermelon.

They were calmed long enough to put Shinya’s presents down before commencing into a howling fit of rage.

“Takuya!” His mother said sharply, her arms crossed. “I want an explanation this instant!”

“What happened to you?! What happened to Shinya!? And most importantly, what happened two Shinya’s two hundred dollar birthday cake!?” Takuya’s father exclaimed, his face turning purple.

“Eheh…hehe…heh…well, that’s actually quite a funny story…” Takuya mumbled, scratching his head.

His parents continued to glare at him.

“Well…” Takuya began, shuffling his feet. “Shinya said it was his birthday and that he got whatever he wanted, and well…”

“Go on.” His father said sternly.

“We got into this argument about whether the light bulb in the refrigerator stays on or goes out when you close the door; Shinya said it always stayed on, but I knew better...and we argued some more and, um….he dared me to see who could eat most of his birthday cake…and I won” Takuya continued, once again trying to massage some of the pain away from his swollen gut.

For a moment Takuya and his parents shared a stony silence, with only the occasional moan from Shinya.

Then his father burst out laughing. His mother, however, gave him a stern look while she massaged her temples.

“Takuya, you know better than to lead your brother goad you like that- if he did. I’m going to ask him when he...wakes up, I suppose. But either way, you’re supposed to be a good example for your brother. Plus, you’re starting to get lazier and lazier. You’re up two pounds from two months ago! That’s a pound a month! DO you want to end up like all those fat teenagers in America?” Takuya’s mom lectured, before turning and elbowing her husband. “This is no laughing matter. Shinya’s already quite paunchy, do you want Takuya to end up like that as well?”

Takuya rolled his eyes. His mother had a phobia of fat. He supposed it came from when she was a child; she herself had been overweight and had been teased for it. She had eventually lost the weight, but was terrified of her family packing on the pounds, thus the monthly weighing and her often references to how fat kids and teenagers in America were. Takuya had told her he’d want to be a sumo wrestler once as a joke and she had actually fainted.

Takuya’s father coughed to stifle his laughter, but an amused twinkle was still in his eye.

“Your mother’s right, Takuya. IT was quite irresponsible of you and Shinya to eat his… two hundred dollar cake…” His father trailed off a moment, paling a bit. “And you don’t want to get fat do you?”

“No, Dad.” Takuya replied after another roll of his eyes.

“Good. But we’re punishing you. You’re grounded for two weeks.” His mother stated more calmly than she had been previously.

“But what about Shinya!” Takuya exclaimed and pointed to his brother, still in a sugar-induced coma.

“It’s his birthday.” His mother replied simply, picking up said birthday boy and taking him into the bathroom to get cleaned up. “I don’t want to speak about this anymore Takuya.”

Takuya scowled and stormed off towards his room, leaving his father in the disaster area that was the kitchen.

Takuya growled as he just leaned against his closed door for a moment, thinking of how unfair his parents had been.

‘Shinya’s the won who dared be! The brat..’ Takuya thought to himself, but was suddenly interrupted when…
