Bella was horrified to return to the common room and find Scout overcome by some stranger.
This weird guy was actually doing some kind of vampire attack, and that was just freakish. This whole school, she thought distastefully, was just a pit of creepy, superstitious - without reflection, Bella had grabbed an oar from where it leaned against a wall, and tucked it under her armpit like a lance. "Let's see if this staking gig works" she muttered.
Mid-lunge, startled, she realised what she was doing. It was like an instinct. And it was too late to pull out of the fight. Personal pull with the local cops wasn't going to help if this guy wasn't undead, and as a sensible modern girl, Bella had problems with this Hammer Horror shit ..oh. Dusted. Inside, part of her was screaming.
"I guess he was a vampire" she said.
"Urrgh."
"Scout? Hold this hanky over the cut and press hard. I'll phone 911."
"Covered in oil" Scout objected.
"Don't be picky" Bella said in a tone she'd perfected over years of Grace. "I'm a mechanic, remember?"
Scout looked round. "Where's Johnson?"
"The guy nibbling your neck? You were friends?" Rawley College. Freakier and freakier.
"I wouldn't say that, man. I can't believe he did that." Scout shook his head incautiously. "Ow."
"No." Bella put down the phone. Scout didn't seem as much of a medical emergency as, in her first panic, she'd thought. She felt a little shaky.
"How did you know what to do?"
"They show a lot of hackneyed horror at the local drive in."
"Really?" Scout thought, maybe I need to know this stuff. "Would you like to go with me?" Oh, why would a hot girl like her be impressed by him, he thought. He'd have to add some inducements. "Moonlight, jujubees, cheesy dialogue?"
Bella laughed. Scout was cute, after all. "OK. Is the cheesy dialogue going to be you or the movie?"
Scout decided honesty might be the best policy. "Both."
Bella frowned at the little pile of dust that had been Harry Johnson. "Did you know he was a vampire?" Anything seemed possible.
"No." Scout looked indignant. Then he said in self defence "he can't have been one for long. He was trying out for crew, this afternoon in the sunshine."
"When was that?"
"A couple of hours ago." Scout worked out what Bella was getting at. "Then he went to his dorm."
"Let's go."
"No!" Scout looked scared.
"Why?"
"He shared a dorm with Ryder. You don't want to mess with Ryder."
