“About four grand, so the school only supplies them for Prefects,” says Tor, referring to his Segway.
“What about the rest of us?” asks Matt. “What if we want to grow big enough to be Prefects?”
“That’s up to you - if you have the money, or can get the money, or convince your parents to buy one, you can have it. For some guys here, four grand is pocket change. Do you parents support your weight gain goals, or have they sent you here just to avoid being teased ‘cause your fat?” explained Fats. “Some parents don’t want their boys to have Segways...they say they’ll be unfit.”
“I don’t know,” replied Matt. “I’ve never asked them for four grand. I suppose they sent me here to avoid teasing...I was kind of hoping they’d buy me a car when I turn 16, but maybe if I asked mom for some of that now...”
“Well, ask them. In the meantime, let’s get get you back to the office so you can register,” Fats replies. “Here,” he adds with a grin, “bonus for your first day. You’ll need this energy for the long walk to get there.” He pulls out a chocolate bar and hands it to Matt. Matt, ravenous now that’s he’s calmed down from his little jog, rips off the wrapper and bits off a generous mouthful of the bar. Fats chuckles at his eagerness, then climbs onto his Segway Matt heads back to the office, as the two phenomenally obese prefects motor along beside him.
They arrive in the office and the receptionist nods to Fats and Tor. “You brought him back,” the receptionist notes.
“Oh, he came willingly enough, once he stopped,” replies Fats. “Just newby nerves, I guess. You know intimidating Pots can be at first.”
“Not to mention the two of you! After all, you’re not exactly average high school boys.”
“No, we’re well above average!” replies Fats proudly as Tor does a drumroll across his own fat. While the two fat prefects whoop it up, Matt grabs his bags and brings them up to the counter. The massive receptionist meets him there.
“Welcome! What’s your name?”
“Matthew Butterworth.”
