"I got this way by taking a pill," you said. "Laura, if you take the same pills you'll be the same as me. They're the ones in my room. They should still be open."
Laura lets out a whoop and runs inside to get the pills. Once she gets to your room, however, she stops. She was extremely bright for her age, and had been moved up several grades for academic excellence. And she could still remember what had happened about a year ago when you had left the cap off a pill bottle and she had taken one without your knowledge. She had ended up in the hospital, and had barely survived. She read at a ninth-grade level, so instead of just taking a pill out, she read the instructions.
"Take one whole pill to be transformed into a human balloon with neutral buoyancy," she read. "Take half a pill to become a human balloon that can still function as a regular human." She didn't know what "function" meant, but she figured it meant something like "act." So the label said to cut the pill in half if you wanted to be a human balloon that could pass for normal. "Take one-quarter pill to simply become lighter. Take two pills at your own risk. You cannot die as a direct result of using this product. If for some reason you pop, you will regenerate from the balloon shards.” She didn’t know what “regenerate” meant, but “generate” meant to make electricity, right? Did that mean you’d “come again” from the balloon shards?
