She showed the papers she had stolen to the guards at the next gate over, and their eyes widened in surprise as they saw the name written thereon. Still, they made no comment as they let her in to the city and she rode into town.
As she passed by on the road, her presence was met with further surprise. Small children playing in the streets darted from the road as she came, young men and women hastily turned away, and the few old people that sat by the side of the road subjected her to raspy incoherent insults. Dauphin began to wonder just what she had gotten into by assuming that woman's identity.
She entered an inn, with the intent to stay the night, when the innkeeper and all the guests fled the establishment on seeing her. Since there was no longer anyone there, she made herself comfortable in one of the deserted rooms, and was soon fast asleep.
She was awoken by the smell of smoke, but as she opened her eyes, the scent vanished. Perplexed, she closed her eyes again, only to be grabbed around the neck by a large fist and lifted into the air.
Her assailant was a large bald man with grey skin. His head was smoking and his eyes were as white as the full moon. "This ends now, Delga," he roared. "Time to make good your end of the bargain."
Dauphin quickly realized that Delga was the name of the woman who she was disguised as. What had she done?
